  • Turning Your Backs On The Troops

[Read the article: On the losing side of the divide]

I'm in the Air Force, currently deployed to the desert. When I hear people calling for troop withdrawl or questioning the reasons for war I don't feel that America is turning their back on me. I don't know of any people I'm working with who feel that either. To me, that's how it should be in America. You should be able to question the President's decisions, you should be able to voice your opinion. That's a big reason I enlisted in the first place, to defend the right to speak up.

Sen. Hagel has it right and Cheney is wrong. I only hope that at the end of all this mess the American people see the light and I don't find myself sitting in Iran a couple years down the road.

  • Where There's Smoke There's Fire

[Read the article: Bush, spying and the I-word]

What has me worried is that while we found out about Bush ordering the wiretapping what else has he secretly ordered and we have no idea about? Just how far has Bush pushed things?

And my big question, why aren't more people asking those two questions.

  • Keeping Us All Safe

    [Read the article: Patriot games]

I know the perfect way to keep us all safe, lock us all up. Yep, put every last American citizen into a Guantanamo style prison. That way we'll all be safe from terrorists. Sure we won't have any freedom either but hey, that's the price to pay for safety.

At what point will the general people wake up and realize that they are slowly giving away their rights, liberties, and freedoms. By the time this all comes to an end what kind of a country will we live in?

  • When The Going Gets Tough...

[Read the article: "Let me say very clearly: I am not addressing any particular report"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

... drag the children into it. After all no one wants to see children get hurt. Sure they have absolutely nothing to do with any of the problems currently plaguing Gonzales and Co but they probably think people will drop this and let the DoJ go after the predators.

This "Think of the children" crap that politicians pull out whenever they want to get their way annoys me to no end. It's almost as bad as mentioning 9/11 just to get your way.

  • A Hard Choice

[Read the article: When is an accidental civilian death not an accident?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Imagine for a moment that you are a Soldier, Marine, or Airman on the ground in Iraq. Your convoy just got hit by and IED and then was ambushed by a group of insurgents and you are pinned down. Close air support could be called in helping to stop the attack but there is a chance for civilian casualties, perhaps saving the life of yourself and the others you are with. Or you can try to keep fighting it out with small arms and support weapons as you try to get out of there in hopes that you won't become a casualty yourself.

On the one hand you are deployed there to help the people of Iraq. You don't want to see any civilians become a casualty. On the other hand you are fighting for your survival. Having the Air Force come in and drop a bomb may be the difference between you living or dying.

I'm in the military and preparing to deploy to Iraq in the next few months. I worry about having to be in a situation just like this. There has been enough suffering in this war already. Every civilian death is a horrible tragedy. But if it comes down to my life or the possibility of civilian deaths as a result of an air strike, I chose my life.

  • Not Quite My Reasoning

No you are not. You are there to find Weapons of Mass Destruction. There aren't any so it's time to leave. Go at your own risk. Remember killing will haunt you for the rest of your life.

C'mon, we all know the WMD thing is bullcrap. I know why I'm volunteering to go to Iraq and it isn't to go kill people. In fact unless something goes horribly wrong I shouldn't have to fire a single shot.

I am going to Iraq to support the Soldiers and Marines who are put in danger every day. I want to do everything I can to make their job easier and hopefully ensure more of them come home safely.
