3-D Beowulf is a modren tale... about the failures of modren leadership
[Read the article: "Beowulf" vs. "The Lord of the Rings"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Retelling an epic story, the storyteller must adjust to his audience and their experiences. As I'm sure the 8th century scops and skalds did in the mead halls of their time.
I saw Zemeckis' adaptation in light of today's events; Modern leaders seduced by power and the short-cuts available to achieve it....
I came out seeing the hated Grendel as a mumbling misunderstood son of the admired King Hrothgar... an heir though illegitimate, but never seen/thought worthy of the throne.
In our present experience, Grendel is the presidency of George W. Bush; the prodigal slacker given most things but shirked the test of combat, he nonetheless wanted his hieratical right to the throne...
The old king can never admit his past errors that brought such a creature to the world. Nor can a father readily admit his son is not presidential material. The problem is allowed to fester. In the hall of government, neither Grendel nor Bush Jr. is comfortable and both nations lose.
The old king hopes for a worthy champion to rid kingdom of his error. Beowulf answers that call and alas is seduced by power....
In the present day, our Grendel had enough “Unferth” allies wanting to return to power that none of the battle–tested heroes would be elected.
The present day Grendel has kept our hall in shambles.

Stimulus Package vs Earmarks !!??
[Read the article: The dismal state of George W. Bush]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]This lame-duck Republican Administration belly-aching about excessive stimulus spending & earmarks, what a HOOT!!!
Six years of wasteful "stimulus spending" in IRAQ has help lots of Middle East economies grow and it actually has built very little infrastructure for anyone, anywhere. (OK, maybe a couple new factories in China)...
Weren't those Middle East economies were equally rewarded by $100 a barrel oil prices.. HUMM...So we paid for a war that DOESN'T stabilize gasoline prices?
Ya Know.... I would rather TRUST my Congressman to do his brand of targeted earmark "stimulus spending" and get one or two more Republican "Bridges to No Where" ....
Than allow Cheney's minions/cronies tuck their "waste fraud and abuse" so deep inside the the 2008 Budget Request sent to Congress.
Vietnam wasted a "Two Bizillion" dollars overseas and the 1970's economy sucked.......... (Yes Mr. Bernanke, that's the technical term for a recession)....
Now we've wasted 3 Trillion dollar overseas and that stimulus was zilch and now our economy sucks....again.
FDR closed the bad banks... and his New Deal SAVED Capitalism once... 75 years ago. Sounds like we are ready for another visit to that same Doctor's Office once more.....

Clinton-Obama '08
[Read the article: Young voters are stoked]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]or Obama-Clinton '08... either bumper-sticker gets my vote!
Democratic team work is what's needed! Every liberal, progressive, moderate, tree-hugger, and yes, "Reagan Democrats" too, need to get on board.
Our federal government is infiltrated with 2nd-string lackeys who were groomed to strictly follow the GOP Lobbyist party line (bozo underlings who implemented "Gonzo-gate," etc). McCain will leave them in place with new "empty suits" demerring to a replacement Rove.
We can't afford to allow a Nader or Mayor Bloomberg to side-track 5% of democratic vote....(Let Ron Paul do that to the Republicans).
Obama or Clinton whomever wins 2nd-place must be a team-player and accept the 2nd-spot. We, Democrats, must accept the primary results and VOTE for that TEAM!

May I suggest: "Clinton- Obama '08"
