  • I heard the same thing a decade and a half ago from the homers in NC

[Read the article: Luxury community of "conscience"]

They wanted to shoot all the Yankees moving in. Literally, we saw bumper stickers that said "I'd Rather be Shooting Yankees" At that time, in Raleigh, the state capital, there were 2000 households w/o running water or electricity and half the roads in the county were unpaved. I would often meet gomers who proudly told me they "Have never been more than 20 miles from the place where I am standin raght chyere." July 4th Celebration at the State Capitol building was a Civil War reenactment.

Then all of us Northunuhs showed up and the roads got paved the crime rate dropped 25% while the population tripled. You want us out? Sho nuff Cleetus, we'll just be a takin our runnin water and shoes with us.

  • What is the distribution for failure rates in LED lights. Is it a event function long a Poisson curve?

50 or a 100 thousand hours are great. If you are >+4STD in the quality control area. But if the bulb fails early you are hosed. This is the tradeoff we learn from 6-Sigma; the cost to push from 5 to 6 sigma can be almost asymptotic for certain processes. And since no one will pay for that the actual failure distribution is far less than 5 or 6 STD, often less than 4, which sounds great until you churn out a billion units of something.

They liked American logo wear like Nike. They knew who Michael Jordan was, never heard of Che. Such thing are quaint brand affinities for overfed middle class progressive anarchist dipshits.

  • And yet here in NC, in Durham

[Read the article: How Hillary Clinton botched the black vote]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Obama is expected, and I stress that word, expected, to get the Black vote, BECAUSE it's black. In other words either we assume that all or most black people will vote for Obama because he's black, or, the media believes this to be the case and the electorate is just going to go along. Faced with that, it doesn't matter a whole hell of a lot what any other candidate does.

  • President Halle Berry?

[Read the article: How Hillary Clinton botched the black vote]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I remember when Denzel Washington and Halle Berry won Oscars in the same year. It was a groundbreaking event, but in the press there was kind of sense of "Well it's their turn" about it as if their performances really didn't matter all that much. It was simply being in the right place at the right time. I think this is the aside the press would love to tell us about with Obama. Well...he might not be the greatest Presidential option there is, but he's good enough and by golly he's black and those people deserve their own President by now. Yeah it's kind of ugly, but liberal guilt always is.

One weak President is much the same as any other. And anyone who imagines this next administration, whoever it is, will be bold and adventurous is just being dense. You already don't want another Clinton, McCain is doddering and Obama is more flash than pan. When was the last inspiring President? Teddy Roosevelt?

  • What is the mean failure rate over a population of bulbs

    [Read the article: Ask Pablo]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

What is the quality of manufacturing. If I buy 1 billion light bulbs how many conk out early. Given they cost a fortune, if there is a significant enough probability that any given bulb conks out then the obscenely high price of each bulb isn't worth the risk to me, unless the bulb vendor provides a warranty.

As long as you're not the guy with a carton of dead bulbs @ $70 per. I've never found consumer oriented technology as durable and reliable as that built for commercial use. I've also yet to hear the reliability in the field of these bulbs under the dirty power conditions of most homes. I would be screaming if my under/over volts, square waves, surges and other distortions cause the bulbs to fail. People are not going to retrofit power conditioners into their home wiring. Yes the failure mode of the device, in the absence of all other factors is bimodal. But the failure mode of the bulbs in use under somewhat new conditions is not.

  • Yahoo branding

[Read the article: No victory: Yahoo feels the heat after Microsoft walks away]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Yahoo will become a brand of Google. The glittery front end that brings all the consumers into Google. Underneath, Yahoo will go away and won't even be assimilated into the Googleplex. What? Do you think Facebook is a technology company? No, it's a brand. Yahoo has the shopfronts, the vendor relationships, the soft fuzzy user experience. Google is the faceless soulless machine.
