  • An American carrier represents about the 15th largest airforce in the world

[Read the article: City of lost children]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Each carrier has the capability to deliver, to anywhere on the planet, a larger strike airforce than most countries. That is the purpose of a carrier group. They are hardly 'targets', what they are is a self contained battle group that can operate anywhere and do for the most part, any role. India, which is spending billions to refurbish 2 Russian and one British carrier would beg to differ that they serve no role for a nation with thousands of miles of coastline and which borders many unfriendly countries with ballistic missile and nuclear capabilities.

  • I hope the primaries never ever end

  • America has always been anti intellectual, superstitious and fearful.

[Read the article: Quote of the day]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Why do you think so much of our raw brain power comes from new immigrants or their 1st generation children, AND IT ALWAYS HAS. 'We' the Americans were too busy burning witches as far back as 1656.

  • Maybe being 90lbs overweight has something to do with it?

This kind of free propagation of useful information is exactly what the web should be about.

this is a modern day Dostoyevsky character who makes suicide more than a political statement but an artform in and of itself.

  • I met a Navy MD who told me

[Read the article: City of lost children]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

At any one time there are 30+ pregnant women aboard a carrier nowadays. Often, more than when they left port. I'm guessing the Saloniks will be outraged about that too - claiming it's all rape and mayhem. It must be.

  • The major rice exporters are in SE Asia and Bangladesh

[Read the article: Where has all the rice gone?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Not Africa. If rice were free Africa would still have to import it. Of course nations like Zimbabwe changing over from food exporters to the precipice of famine because idiot criminals run the country might have something to do with it. Elsewhere in less industrially advanced countries the effects of AIDS on the adult population certainly trickle down to the available workforce for growing and harvesting food. The third problem is localized population explosions. West Africa, particularly Nigeria (pop 138 million) are going through population explosions despite decades of tribal warfare. One side effect of this is to make food the likeliest weapon of war. If you look at the Maghreb, in Egypt, the amount of arable land is tiny and what they have is being chewed up by urban sprawl. Egypt is on track to be the most populous country in Africa (currently 81 million). And they don't have much arable land or much in the way of natural resources except for the seasonal flood of the Nile plain which tends to destroy land and property. Only about 2% of Egypt is irrigated even though it shows a +17 million cubic KM renewable water surplus every year. And Nigeria is even worse; 0.2% irrigated land and once you factor in Egypt's Nile, Nigeria is a thousand times drier than Egypt. Water hungry crops like rice don't grow with that.

  • I put my deposit down months ago

[Read the article: Prepare for the assault on "Grand Theft Auto IV"]

I hope it sparks outrage. Otherwise the game builders haven't done their job. And if you don't like that, go to the local hobby shop, buy an acre of bubble wrap and put your precious fragile children in it.
