  • Yes Tim, John Lindsay ran for Mayor of NYC, and won as a Republican AND a Liberal

[Read the article: How 1968 changed Hillary]

But I think that the real problem is fatally simple. There is no such thing as party, or program. Everything's been subsumed by ideology. The right has become Somoza and the left has become Castro. You're either at one end of the ideological spectrum or you are at its antipode. Nothing matters except the credentials you can get to gain membership into either of those two extremes.

You're either a plutocrat or a Leninist. You're either a Sandinista or you support right wing death squads. Gallindez or Trujillo. No one cares about progress or results or right or wrong or good or bad. All they care about is their agitprop. One waves and identifies strenuously with his copy of Vremya and his opposite is standing across the street with a bullhorn and Samizdat.

The Era of national politics embodied by men like Javits, Moynihan, Rockefeller, men who could actually make deals and make progress, were thoughtful and pragmatic is dead and buried with them. It's over. It's politics like you see in South America or Asia; Parliamentary systems with 3 dozen parties and no clear distinction among them except that all the politicians are screaming and fighting to convince you they are the Light and everyone else is a crook. Except everyone is a crook, or worse. So their followers cling to them with near religious experience fervor, a cult, because they know without that they're all hacks and bunglers.

  • Friend of mine produces political advertising

[Read the article: Cashing in on the Clinton campaign]

It is very very very lucrative. And like the people who hire you, you're not required to believe or like or care about any of it. It's media product. Save the Shrieking Bad Opera for Bloggers.

  • Yeah but

[Read the article: Thank you, Rush Limbaugh!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

It's vacuous garbage. It's 'speech' that is and about nothing. It's meaningless. It's word salad. No one cares what their candidate can or will do. They care about standing on a soap crate and proclaiming their values are more heroic than anyone else's.

  • No, what it means is that the self anointed liberals have careened all over the road

[Read the article: How 1968 changed Hillary]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The thing that's changed is the left itself. In reaction to the debacle that is this current administration, the left has gone further left than is practical or rational. Now anyone to the right of Emma Goldman is the enemy. The liberals hatred of HRC has more to do with their changes over time than anyone else's. Tell you what; run a communist as Obama's VP candidate and let me know how that works out for you. I'm guessing America isn't ready for that yet.

  • Also

[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Aren't you the people who personally guaranteed that we absotively will bomb Iran tomorrow morning 8am sharp for about the last 1500 days straight? When you're wrong, you're wrong in a big way.

  • debaser

But that's your reaction to it. The poles are just getting further and further and further apart. 40 years ago there really were anticommunist liberals in the US. That's heresy today.

  • We can split the difference

[Read the article: Megan McArdle and Dan Drezner's defense of the media]

Cover Obama as if he is the Messiah. And cover some of those other troublesome issues that no one has any intention of addressing.

  • Chris Matthews is worth many millions of dollars to McCain

[Read the article: McCain maintains menacing money problems]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

What with all the free PR McCain gets. Of course Obama is the Second Coming so that's got to be worth a few dollars too.

  • American Liberalism is guilt and totebags

[Read the article: Quote of the day ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

It's a brand. That's why it hasn't achieved much recently.

  • Some of the examples are quite clever

Especially the apps that combine social networking, real time data, databases and GPS.

From Seattle's Finest, Peel's and Tim Horton?

  • wow don't let that one go.

Bring her home to mom. "So how did you two meet?"

"Well I was on the pole airing it out for a free boob job and your son was licking $5 bills and sticking them on my ass. Can you pass that chicken salad?"

  • I'm with Mister Marker

[Read the article: Don't blame YouTube, MySpace for teen beating video]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I was jumped in HS and hit with a bike chain. Later in the year two of those fine upstanding citizens mysteriously drowned while being chased off a church property at night. The insurgency tailed off rather precipitously after that. Oh there were occasional mailbox rundowns after that but we fixed that by anchoring it on a 12ft iron pipe 6" diameter filled inside and out with concrete. The next time I do believe someone flew through the windshield.

  • It no longer matters Joan

You shepherded the whole colony to Jim Jones Kool Aid Land and now they're ahead of you and out of control. What is it they say about revolutions eating their own children?

  • Even Todd Gitlin thinks it was more or less pointless

[Read the article: Through a bong, darkly]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Mr Gitlin one of the founders of the SDS now says that the '60's' pretty much didn't accomplish anything and also that this new crop of angry anarchists is even worse. But I'm not sure who this fascinates. Other than every other TV commercial which uses 60's pop music or aging broken down icons like Dennis Hopper, who's really paying attention to that anymore? The 60's? C'mon I was watching retarded MTV program about the '90's' and THAT was like ancient history.

  • Funny thing about Korea and Germany

[Read the article: McCain's century-long problem]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The US proposed radically cutting back our military presence in both of those countries and the local uproar quite interesting. In Korea - actually it was the Koreans who proposed it. Then they suddenly realized that the US backfills the RoK's defense to the tune of approx. 50% of their total defense budget. So that plan went nowhere. And in Germany the local and regional governments suddenly realized that the US contributes more than 19 billion dollars a year to the local economies. So they successfully lobbied their own Federal government to keep the US troops in Germany. You have to go back to the 80's and the Philippines to see an instance where a country successfully transitioned from a US military presence. It's in truth quite hard to pull off. So once you have established an extensive presence somewhere it's for the most part permanent.

  • Only in the NYT can they frame this as a tourist issue

[Read the article: Dropping like a lead imperialist balloon]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

In the US copper prices are driving thieves to tear out the metal of railroad crossing gates causing them, obviously to fail and cause fatal train vs. car collisions. But the Grey Old Lady needed to a photo op so they chose to worry about CoE roofing.

  • Isn't that violation of most HMO/PPO terms?
