Heh, nice argumentative tactic. But Gerson is not the argument here. Can you find fault with Peter Wehner's analysis? Try that one for size.

Fair enough. My fault for not linking the Wehner article in the first place:

    http://www.commentarymagazine.com/viewarticle.cfm/RE-RETHINKING-IRAQ-br---Obama-s-War-11263

The central point in this thread that got you started on my case was my question to Real Military Patriot regarding the last paragraph in his last post, which was whether or not he was implying that Obama was not totally sincere in his position regarding the Iraq war. He never replied. Wehner's analysis, I believe, reinforces my argument that Obama has not been telling the whole truth about his stance on Iraq.

I think you and susan believe me to be a warmonger nutcase, which is why you have both argued against me so strongly. Nothing could be further from the truth. I consider myself a realist. The nutcases (or fiendish geniuses, it can be argued), brought us into this mess and it is very tempting to just up and leave. But I believe we cannot just up and leave -- not out of selflessness, but because it is against our own national interest. In no way, shape or form am I saying that we cannot try out other strategies, including asking for help and advice from others -- but it remains our problem that we have brought upon ourselves. We need to take the lead in resolving it.

  • Guys...

    Ron, LWM, Kitt...

I don't get caught up with reading the reams of details regarding the different factions, sides, identities, what-have-you of Iraq. Each "report" is always one person's view of the situation, seen through his mental filters, about a specific set of events, related to a situation that is constantly morphing. This is not just 8 blind men and an elephant -- it's a thousand blind men feeling out a shape-shifting giant octopus. I don't read this stuff, honestly. And everything that I read I always take with a (very large) grain of salt.

I observe general trends and reach my conclusions from there. From my observations, at the end of the day I believe that the USA will be ill-served by a withdrawal from Iraq that does not leave in place a stable state. It may very well be the case that it is now impossible to achieve that goal. But we should at least give it one more try, and I believe that McCain will do a better job than the previous administration. Would Clinton or Obama do even better? Maybe. It will be the voters who decide (thank heavens for little mercies) -- and it will be the voters who will live with the consequences. Such is a democracy. Such is our fate.

  • Wow, late to the party _again_ !

250 letters already? Really active thread, this one. Ferraro? Give me a break. You guys are fighting the last war. The new one is Wright. The Repubs are going to have a field day with this one -- and they'll never let up. All the Obama supporters should really think hard now just how "electable" he is after this disaster. Gods, didn't any of his people see this coming?

At this point I've already given up on American voters to choose their politicians (both on a local and national level) wisely. Too emotional, too many hidden agendas, no long-term thinking, never looking at the big picture. I'm crossing my fingers on this one... but I already have a plan B. Either way, you're all dreaming if you think any of those three candidates can do anything about the steamroller that's rolling through the US economy.

Enjoy the sideshow while it lasts, kids. When the next POTUS gets sworn in and has to deal with the sh*t we're in there's going to be a lot of teeth-gnashing. Promises will be broken, people will be hurt and tears will be shed. But hey... it's only politics, lol.

Interesting anecdote about your dad. In my case, my wife and I have always voted Democrat, but we'll vote McCain if Obama is the Dem's candidate. My reasons are in my letter history -- and don't worry about scanning through them, I don't post that much. So, there are many angles to this particular polyhedron.

And, as always, good luck in getting your candidate into the White House.

  • All arguments are moot...

The USA has been digging this grave for decades... through both Repub and Dem administrations.

I don't think the Dems want to go there. McCain's son has been serving in Iraq for some time now. It's not very publicized for the same reasons the UK's prince Harry's deployment was hushed up. It would work even more to his advantage.

Dude, you are just too funny! How do you do it? Do your great takes just appear magically in your brain when you smell your fingernails after scratching your balls? You have to share the secret recipe... it's a money-maker!!!

    Jeb asks:

"What is the difference between a recession and a depression?"

    Answer:

A recession is when your neighbor loses his job. A depression is when you lose yours.

    (sorry. I couldn't resist :-)
