is a fine actress with exactly as many Oscars as Ms. Jolie. She is also of mixed race, which is perfect for this role. There is no law against casting an actress who physically fits a given role without having to change nearly every aspect of their appearance. That seems an unnecessay burden for an actress, the production itself, and for the audience requirement of suspension of disbelief.

Having said that, Ms. Jolie has become so pretentious I can barely tolerate her. And there is absolutely no way to deny that her constant media exposure has destroyed her ability to truly immerse herself in a character and make it believable. I am not alone in my thinking, and despite some of the kudos for her here and elsewhere, there are some noteworthy exceptions which track exactly with what I am saying. Ms. Jolie has become a self-important diva:

  • One way protests can work

is to stop having them on weekends when everyone has gone out of town. A massive, week-long, highly inconvenient, disruptive, noisy protest that includes peaceful civil disobendience would be hard to ignore. Stop the endless speechifying by ANSWER et al.and add in some good protest worthy music. The coverage would surely be overwhelmingly negative, but what would be unusual about that? People who are sick and tired of the media and status quo would still see it and cheer.

As for the lefty blogosphere, it surely is good to increase awareness by daily exposing lies and criminal activities, but the blogs who actively discourage street protests should be ignored and condemned by people of conscience. We have more than enough information by now to know criminals are running the country. What good does it do to keep picking and picking as if tongueing a bad tooth? It is time to organize action. If you don't think so, well, just keep writing your comments and Lte's, keep calling and e-mailing your "representatives" and by all means, keep scouring the internet for more nuggets of repulsive wrongdoing and tell your friends and neighbors what you find. That has worked well so far, hasnt it?

    Hasn't it?

Fantastic idea. Associate a political cause or point of view with taking a week off to cause traffic jams and other nuisances to ordinary working folk. If protest direct action is to have any positive effect, it has to hit the powerful, not the masses one needs for the cause.

If you really think the solution is to make media coverage of protest causes even more negative than it is now, perhaps you have no standing to chastise people for commenting on blogs, without having any capacity whatsoever to know whether they are in fact doing other things in their lives to make a real difference.

Fittingly, your comment is just as alienating to your natural allies as would be your suggested protest tactics.

    1. Tell us how we can hit the powerful without inconveniencing ordinary working folk. I am asking in all sincerity, as my husband and I are as working class as people get.

    2. My point is, media coverage will be negative no matter what. Might as well make it count.

    3. I'm not chastising people for commenting on blogs, I'm chastising people who comment on blogs and actively discourage and ridicule direct action. I thought that much was clear? Sorry if it wasn't, but as I am here commenting on a blog...:)

    4. My suggested protest tactics are alienating to folks who are unwilling to cause a stir, to put their bodies on the line, to sacrifice time or jail terms or head knocks or anything else for the good of the country.

My overal point is, what we have been doing has not put a dent in the criminal activities of the Bush Junta. Oh sure, people are more aware, people are disgusted, but the evil continues unabated, unashamed, unimpressed, as starkly illustrated by the big FU delivered by Bush the other day.

Sign me up. Boycots, protests, civil disobedience, general strike. Whatever it takes.

Ondelette-yes, thank you, we need all the pieces of the puzzle.

We need to bug the shit out of jelly spined Dems until they stop disrespecting us, the base. Vote out the Lieberliars who are nothing more than neocon moles. Stop voting for people like Sherrod Brown of Ohio, "progressive" tho he may be, who voted for the MCA. What good is it to have a Dem in office if he gives us the shaft on something that important? If he won't stand against that he'll buckle on anything. Stop rewarding these fools when they so egregiously vote against our values. Brown is not the only one, of course, just an example.

Flood, and I do mean FLOOD, the Capitol switchboards and e-mail inboxes on a daily basis until we get satisfaction on impeachment. You say it's a loser? What is the alternative? At least we can gum up the works and maybe prevent even more serious shenanigans. Considering the lawlessness that permeates this administration, anything less than impeachment in unacceptable.

So I say Impeachment should be our first priority. There are already popular movements afoot to bring it about, including several State Legislatures who are bringing resolutions to the floor-

Thankfully, Section 603 of the United States House Rules provides for the inception of impeachment proceedings in the House of Representatives "by charges transmitted from the legislature of a State."
