They can't hold both positions. There would be obvious fear in humans if it were revealed that vampires were real. There would be danger to the vampires, because humans may decide to simply kill them off all to be safe.
There can hold both positions because there is a schism within the vampire community between those who want to "mainstream" and become as much a part of human society as possible, and those who want to maintain their own vampire social and political structures. A lot of the vamps are of the opinion that revealing themselves was a mistake. Also, the vamps do have a lot to fear from humans, as evidenced by the fanatical "Fellowship of the SUN" who fear them. True Blood is constantly depicting teevee debates between vampire advocates and anti-vampire fundies who are out to destroy them. In addition, the trial you mentioned took place in the dead of night in a junkyard, they didn't hire out the American Legion hall and take out ads in the paper announcing it.
If Obama folds (he most assuredly will if his short tenure in office is any indication) and does what some are advising, and neocons are demanding, and ramps up the rhetoric in favor of the opposition, inside Iran the protesters will be cast as American stooges. Which will of course result in further repression and crackdowns.
How long before we hear the equivalent of 'zomg, they're throwing babies out of incubators!!'??
Will we fall for it this time?
Looks like it....
