  • the problem is....if Joan wanted a serious discussion of race....

[Read the article: Americans more ready for a black president than a woman?]

Joan could have used her position, during this historic weekend to elaborate and promote discussions about race, she instead failed miserably. To claim that the the racial and class problems of this country are tied to Limbaugh et. al. only shows how "misguided" this site has become for those who want to discuss issues that people are interested in and are moved by. If "taking on" morons like limbaugh/Fox etc is the only weapon you have in your arsenal...we are doomed.

  • just chance that Joan mentioned Gates and not Cornell?

[Read the article: Americans more ready for a black president than a woman?]

Why does Joan not mention Cornell West in discussing "black leaders"? Ignorance or because he mirrors what Wright said but even more forcefully or logically? Interesting that Salon publishes Paglia and not West or Dyson?

  • "The data is disturbing for those who want a woman in the White House"

That seems to be obvious...now how about those that want the best "president"...couldn't a post be about that?

God I would only hope so..but alas

  • Which canidate had it "harder"

That is a complicated question. To raise political funds when you don't already have a vast network...does that make it easier? Growing up in Oak Park? Both ended up in the Ivy League and as everyone knows 90% of those who get there get there because who they knew and the money their parents had....one didn't have that opportunity. One was drafted into the elite course of the party and served on many boards etc.. The number of white upper middle class women who were admitted to the best schools can't be disputed.

Another had to come up from the dirty reality of local politics and accepted money that wasn't "sanitized" by the system or marriage. But he went into the nitty gritty of social policy and issues.

One might have more connections, but the other knows the basics of politics and the people who live the basics- the other hasn't despite her prostestations.

And our educational and social system graduates less than 70% of all people but the criminal justice system locks up close to 30% of black males....carry on

"It's about time someone made it plain that if these anti-liberals really think that calling Hillary a "fucking whore" is a sign of their (or, ridiculously, Obama's) progressive politics and intellectual high-standing and moral fiber..."

You comment misrepresents the serious comments of those who have criticized Hillary and Joan. People are questioning the STRAWMAN argument put forward by Joan as she characterizes this race and Obama supporters. I would lay it out again, but the esveral posts that have raised this point have been ignored by Hillary supporters and BY JOAN. Instead, the focus remains on a couple of dorks and how people should use better language. Even in a perfect world we will find "dorks" who say stuff...journalistic responsibility requires more discernment and careful thought.

  • @Ricardo....well put!

[Read the article: Thank you, Rush Limbaugh!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

What you said Ricardo! Why has Joan has not addressed the poll that shows almost 30% of Hillary supporters would vote for McCain? This seem eminately more interesting and important than a word used by a comic? Joan's credibility has taken some serious hits lately and it is not because Obama supporters are sexist or that Hillary isn't the nominee because she is a woman. I would suggest that if Joan is seriously interested in a debate of sexism v. racism, and not fomenting "noise" her choices of topics of blogs and articles on the site would be more balanced.

I raised this point before but Joan's dismissal of Rev. Wright's comments and "decision" not to publish points of view of Wright from people such as Dyson or Henry Louis Gates et al betrays much. Ya, I know Joan has proclaimed her dedication to the cause of Afro-Americans. This salon is as white as the original French version.

  • Joan, Recycling stuff and the noise here..maybe use editor's choice?

    Joan,

Given the volume of letters generated I can see the problem in marking all worthwhile letters as editor's choice, but it sure would focus attention and perhaps some decent discussion and clear up the fact that Obama supporters aren't yelling "bitch". If membership has increased so much can't you find a temp to separate the wheat from the chaff?

  • Joan..not questioning your sincerity regarding your confession.

[Read the article: Thank you, Rush Limbaugh!]

"I do this job because I care about the truth. I think that should be clear. A lot of people project their own fervent biases onto me, assume I must be acting from the same motivation they are: Support for one or another candidate. I'm not. But when I see important truths consistently ignored or denied, I'm there. I am a woman, and I happen to care about sexism."

The key point that is ignored by good middle class liberal thought is, "when I see important truths consistantly ignorned or denied". As has been pointed out before this is a selection/perception issue that requires some objectivity as a journalist. Most likely this is a problem associated with the cyber culture. Your posts are more blog than journalism, which I don't have a problem with at all-the mode of production has changed. However, this subjectivity comes with much greater responsibility which I think is the source of people questioning your judgment. Which is a problem that, "I wouldn't give to a monkey on a rock".

Under your editorship the race problem has become worse. The only article on Rev. Wright's comments were yours. I find it hard to believe that you couldn't have found another perspective on Wright's comments..again Dyson or Gates? that is the deal I don't understand.
