An interesting article could be written about the "balance" of NPR, especially their panel discussions, in their use of Fox New "reporters". The supposed "fair" Diane Rehm has 2 of their people on every Friday. Not to mention that Juan Williams, of Fox, is their "senior black correspondent".

What is interesting is that someone spends more time "investigating" a pointless argument to "feel good" rather than focus attention and journalistic space to issues that really matter to women. When Salon actually gets around to discussing issues of class, they could be taken seriously. It is easy to "quote" other dorks in the media, lord knows they are all over the place, rather than do some thoughtful work on class and gender. But, if you are shallow enough to think that Hilary lost because of sound bytes from Fox, then not much can be expected of you. For your information, I was a Hilary supporter until Jan. or Feb.. She showed NO class and took every effort to sound like she had Turettes when she spouted, Fahrakan, "to the best of my knowledge", the weather underground etc.. Sorry those idiot statements had nothing to do with her being a woman, but a calculating pol. who has no standards or class who would say anything. If Salon is so invested in the plight of white working class women, Joan might actually commission articles about how income and class affects economic policy. Instead we hear nothing about how Hilary thinks that 96K middle class when the median income for a family of 4 is 42k.

Sorry, but when you truck in that crap you have NO credibility in calling anyone else out.

I have posted this question numerous times and have yet to get a response. White liberal woman in the media don't want to discuss this issue.....

Bite your tongue! Salon isn't interested class...that is unfortunately obvious. Take it up with Joan...tho that is ineffectual.

A previous poster made the accurate observation that the quality of book reviews and "journalism" has fallen greatly under the editorship of Ms. Joan.

When a piece of writing attempts to be an overview or thoughtful cultural criticism, but elicits responses that say, "I am not like that" or "Those people suck" one has to ask about the purpose of piece and the the editorial atmosphere at Salon in general. Any piece of cultural criticism requires a level of generalization and abstraction that Salon readers no longer seem capable of. Instead it comes down to "I am offended" or "that doesn't fit me, so the entire piece is crap" or "it is exactly correct". No space is opened for DISCUSSING class, race etc. That is the fault of the writer and this kind of response was invited. If the author is interested in these question she might look at Pierre Bourdieu's work on taste and class in his work "Distinction".

Instead of thoughtful analysis we get an "interview" that is composed of softball questions that are merely promotional opportunities for the author and the "journalist". How much work and time does it take to produce something like this? I teach undergrads who could write this piece and discover something that is interesting. This is another example of phoning in pieces to a "Blog" that is NOT JOURNALISM. This piece was as thoughtful and tasteless as Patrick Stoner's idiotic "reviews" and interviews of films on PBS.

I am with you on the not bothering to check Salon much anymore. Slate has much more insightful reviews of just about everything. Trolls took over much of the comments section but that is because of the sensationalistic and irrational gender baiting posts of ms. Joan. In other words, one reaps what one sows. When one posts "blogs" with no journalistic standards...well you get dorks and trolls and asshat men replying.

  • Discussions of class and race.....Salon is hurtin ..how about Eric Dyson.

Ok, Landers is hip and pisses some people off...this isn't the end of the world either way and if you indulge this piece to be outraged...get a life. One poster made the important remark that Salon doesn't have any African American critical writers. This is an important point. Instead of Michael Eric Dyson or Henry Louis Gates we get the reactionary babbling shrew Camila Paglia as a representative of "intellectual culture" and everyone, on the right and left, can exorcise their guilty demons.

When was the last time that Salon did a decent piece on thoughtful and intellectual African American who wasn't an entertainer? When has Salon had a piece on the class? When the median family income is 42K and Hillary thinks that 92K is middle class, there seems to a window of opportunity for an investigative piece ala Greenwald, but no..we never get pieces that might make middle class whiter liberals who make 75K uncomfortable.

you said, "There remains, though, the need to mock someone. White people are it. This is progress?' oh poor middle class or white people they are being made fun off...so sad. Welcome to the real world where power operates..esp. class. Progress? That is an incredibly specious concept.

You said, "there's nothing especially surprising at this point in Hendrix's drugged guitar fumblings" Wow..talk about ignorance and lack of historical thinking....and I don't care what color you are.

Are you sure your real name isn't michael richards?

You said, "You can't really make fun of liberals

They're too insufferably stupid to get the sarcasm. And you can't do a better job than the White Boy Dreds do to themselves."

wow...what A silly Rush limbaugh statement...Unfortunately Salon invites this kind of lack of thought and stupidness...it is all about ratings.
