  • PBS claims that these "shows" produce the most income....and endless fundraising

PBS claims that all these snake oil and crappy music infomercials have to be aired because they bring in more pledge dollars than the traditional fundraising model. The problem I see with this position is that the amount of time devoted to fundraising has more than tripled-at least on my PBS station in Indiana.

The old model was based on community organizing and was trotted out only twice a year for a period of one week. Now we get 4 fund raisers that last for 3 weeks. Well of course it can be claimed that the new model brings in more money.

  • @Kemo Sabe...other people's experience that funddrives are lasting much longer?

I agree with your point concerning the seeming effectiveness of these type of shows. The question I have is that they are more successful because fundraisers are 5 times longer than in the past and require less work on the part of local stations. It used to be that we had 2 fundraisers a year that lasted a week or 10 days each. Now we have 4 fundrives a year and they last 22 or 23 days each. Is this common for the rest of the country?

What is the purpose of this site? Does it have any pretense to being a place to hash out the issues of democracy or just more pointless yapping that serves no purpose. You people are shameful...no other topics out there hash out ISSUES or promote discussion? No, more pandering to the delusional and trolls.

I am with you on trying to come up with a more subtle and effective way of discussing race, but I don't think this article in anyway furthers a better understanding of race. In fact it only furthers the view that race can be discussed by saying..."look he is a clan member or hates blacks I understand how race operates what the problem is and what the solution is.".

This article has enough red meat in it fan the flames of passion, self righteousness and nastiness of supporters on each side. I really don't see how this is any different than the cable TV shows that pander to base instincts and interests for the sake of stirring up the pot to garner ratings and further personal career goals.

"You SOBs certainly didn't have the misfortune to have been born in the hills of WVa, Kentucky, or Appalachia. The people who live in those places are often honest, good hearted souls, who are just trying to get by in this world. They many be poor, they may not have a good education but they are not stupid and due your derision. I certainly would like to see the tables turned and you arrogant elitists have to deal with the hand these people have been dealt and see how you like it. Get off your high horse. If Obama can't connect with these voters it is not their fault."

HERE HERE! As an Obama supporter I find this not only distasteful but incredibly shortsighted and self-righteous. I think this is lack of any awareness of how class operates or how the world works...it is that myopia that Republicans tend excel at, but we are doing a damn good job of it. Is this Obama fault? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Thanks for the great posts, tired of the stupid flaming around here. I think if the finger can pointed anywhere it is the Cable TV "news" programs and unfortunately SALON.Com.

This article was nothing more than throwing out more red meat to whip up more of the moronic back and forth that that so many seem to love. ANYONE with half a brain knows the nomination is sewn up, yet Salon keeps throwing more gas on the fire by perpetuating the MYTH that Hilary can win. Who in the hell doesn't know there are racists in WV or Indiana? This article became nothing more than a spectacle to whip up emotions and self-righteousness. Most importantly it distracts or deludes people into thinking that how race affects our society is hatched in the minds of rural poor people or clan members. Notice how Weepingforbroomhilde's very thoughtful posts on race are ignored while people continue with their Jr. High prognostication while betraying a lack of interest in thinking about anything. Someday maybe Salon will get around to talking about the dynamics of class and its intersection with race rather than ..oh never mind....class is a taboo subject around here other than people saying, "I am/was...bla bla bla"

"Hillary Clinton's 41-point margin in West Virginia was impressive, but probably can't change the overall momentum of the campaign."

I am sorry Joan but this statement is not only delusional but for your sake only undercuts your credibility. The major problem is that you hold on to the premise, that is DELUSION, that Hilary can get the nomination. Any sober, rational and thoughtful editor would begin with the fact that she has NO chance of winning. The chances of her getting the nomination are equal to Bush getting a Nobel peace prize. A responsible editor realizes that their credibility relies on addressing facts not Hopes and delusions that might serve your own existential/gender yearnings.

"Momentum"? That is a bogus concept to raise when the rock is a foot from the bottom when it falls from a cliff. You don't have to be a physics major to understand that.

Nutin personal, but the this delusional psychosis is surprising from someone I used to think was rational. But I guess this management style gets you on TV and hits to sell to advertisers for bogus shit.

Your posts have become a trickle and I don't see much reason to come around here....might we exchange email? The intelligent life here has become NIL with the red meat throwing of Joan's editorship.
