I can't believe I am answering you, but here it goes. Fort Wayne has NEVER elected an African American to a district wide election. The same can be said about Lafayette, where I went to grad school. I don't think Indy has elected any, but I might be wrong. Tell me where you have been in Indiana. This state has been solidly Republican since the 30's and when he gets votes in the cities and enough in the counties, he is a mensch. Oh, wait that doesn't matter in the nihilistic parsing and triangulation strategy that disregards reality.

  • Indiana cities...Fort Wayne...

Fort Wayne is about 9% black or less and 7% hispanic...

Unfortunately the only "discussion" that occurs here is if you be an ahole and antagonize someone. The only person that can be held responsible for this is.... well you know.

I understand your impulse, but she isn't a friend of mind and has shown no...regret. I go to sites for journalism and thought. perhaps it is my hangup, but once she starts to discuss or report on class...I would be more forgiving.

ya, the idea that it is promoted seems to be the case. I have noticed many more popup adds and Joan et al could do a bit more to not encourage more stupid posts by people who can't do math...It must be the clicks

  • @XH ...no I have been a ho on class...

I feel as if I have become a pesk on the class issue. The most important issue is how the middle class is defined...at what income level and tied to that is the criminal justice system. check old letters?

  • Two peas in a pod....what should Joan do now? Disingenious talk about class?

It doesn't take much imagination to see how the credibility and job security of Hilary and Joan are intricately intertwined.

We continually hear blanket statements about class and white folk, but NO DISCUSSION of the issue of class. Perhaps Barak has problems with working class white folk. The problem is how each defines middle or working class and the associated tax rates. Guess what how Obama wants to define middle and working class is MUCH MORE in the interest of the working poor. Hilary has myopic and devious definition of class and income that is based on the same BS tactics of the Republicans. 96k let alone 250K is NOT middle or working class income. I am still astounted out this important difference is systematically ignored on a site that claims to be liberal and more serious than Fox News. The number of articles examining how each defines class and its tax implications on Salon are EXACTLY equal to that one finds on FOX>

  • this place has become a drunken junk yard fight...who is responsible? JOAN

Joan is entitled to her preference for Hilary...everyone get over it-it ain't gonna change. The problem she poses to furthering any useful discussion or thought is the big problem and why Salon has gone down hill. I have taken shots at Joan for her bias, but so what? How many times can you point it out or point out what a moron Shawnwm is?

Joan's failure is not ideological but her strange view of journalism and her lack of responsibility is a complete failure. I am still confused as to why she doesn't pick a few posts as editor choices so as to focus debate. This is particularly important in terms of Weepingforbroomhilde's posts about how to address the question of race and racists. But then you would have to acknowledge that his concept is one that requires "egghead" thought that comes from social scientific academic thought. Perhaps she addressed one of his posts, but I missed it and that is entirely her fault.

Instead she intervenes at certain points to address minor points, like poetry, so as to sound open to discussion.

While Joan asks for a discussion or race, any mention of class and the criminal justice system is ignored. I am still trying to figure out how it is not in the interest of white blue collar workers to define the middle class as 75K and not 250K. If your concern is for the working class, how is this continually ignored when the median family income is 42K? Joan you can't have it both ways. If you are trying to speak truth to power and not engage is talkinghead self interest, then take up this issue...otherwise you sound like a hypocrite.

  • We have all become talking heads....which is pathetic.

You can attack or defend Joan, but the posts here are tit for tat BS that does nothing. Anyone think they are gonna convert Shawn or the crazy Texas people to thought are delusional egoists. Maybe we should spend time investigating other media outlets since Salon no longer does anything remotely close to journalism. Did anyone catch Moyers last night?
