  • Meanwhile, back at the pig ranch...

[Read the article: Hollywood and swine]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

...what about actors who really HAVE let themselves go--hello, Vince Vaughn--who are still considered studly? Or the ones who were chunkmuffins from the getgo--and yeah, I'm lookin' at you, Jack Black...

These guys are basically the male version of Kirstie "Fat Actress" Alley, but you don't see THEM suckin' down the Jenny Craig. I think it's safe to say that with pairings like Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston, the missionary position has become downright dangerous in Hollywood.

Yes, "Details," there really is a trend toward "relaxed fit" stars nowadays. And they're all GUYS.

  • By the same token...

[Read the article: And keep a close eye on those Macacans, too]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

...let's not let big fat guys who talk like Bronx truck drivers determine national security policy any more. Clearly they are a menace to the country's safety.

  • This story ties nicely into Patrick Smith's story today...

...about focusing too much on passengers and not enough on law enforcement.

What has King done as chair of the Homeland Security Committee? He jumped up and down about the Dubai deal because it was politically advantageous, but he has done NOTHING about making our ports, chemical plants, nuclear plants and airports more secure. He supports Bush's funding cuts for security programs. He supports Bush's willingness to let corporations do NOTHING to beef up their security, even if they have vulnerable facilities that could do humongous damage if attacked. He has been a total lappoodle to the Repugs' special interests. He has done NOTHING to make the Department of Homeland Security an efficient, workable agency. He makes a stink when it is in his political interests, and does nothing otherwise. Now he's throwing some red meat to his xenophobic suburban constituents.

This guy is a pathetic excuse for a security overseer.

On another note, ever wonder why King, this extreme conservative, voted against impeaching Clinton--not coincidentally, right after Larry Flynt said he would "out" philandering and harrassing congressman who voted FOR impeachment? It is literally the ONLY time King has ever bucked the party leadership. There is a major story there (I know this for a fact, as I know several of his ex-staffers) if someone wants to pursue it.

  • Can you say Miranda?

[Read the article: "The Closer" -- nail it shut]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Are none of the suspects on The Closer familiar with their Miranda rights? They all just sit there, unaccompanied by counsel, jabbering on and digging themselves ever deeper. Under those circumstances, Zippy the Chimp could wring out a confession.

And puh-freaking-LEEZE with that "Southern" accent! She sounds like she's auditioning for the lead in the Rotary Club production of A Streetcar Named Desire.

I watched this show for the first time on the recommendation of a friend, and for the second time just to make sure it was as bad as I thought, and that I hadn't just seen a bad episode. But my hunch was confirmed! Wow, maybe I should be a detective!

  • The old anchormen had emotion too...

    [Read the article: Method anchor]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

...it just wasn't prefabricated. Remember Walter Cronkite telling the country about JFK, or narrating the moon landing? Or Dan Rather's classic exchanges with Nixon and Bush I?

The fact that Anderson Cooper went after Landrieu--a peripheral player at best in the Katrina catastrophe--proves that it was outrage for outrage's sake, and not a buildup of genuine fury leveled at the people who deserved it. I have no doubt he was genuinely affected by what he saw. I also have no doubt that he exploited it to the hilt, and continues to do so, shamelessly. They should rename the show "What Would Anderson Feel?" His show is just a WASPier, better-bred version of the usual tabloid trash.

And yes, someone please tell Katie Couric that her job IS to tell people what happened--not to "help them understand" blah, blah, blah. Katie, the last time I saw you, you were flying around the set of the Today show, strung up on a Peter Pan wire for some little bit they had you doing. So, um, you're not really in a position to condescendingly explain anything to anyone. Why didn't they just let Bob Schieffer keep that job until he retired?

The only news show worth watching is Countdown with Keith Olbermann, who, to use an expression Anderson Cooper uses frequently, really does "keep it real."

  • Is is just me...

[Read the article: The joys of life without God]

...or does Salon seem to have a disproportionate amount of articles by/interviews with self-promoting atheists?

I firmly agree that religion has probably wreaked more havoc than most other forces on earth, and certainly the so-called religious right in this counry has been nothing short of disastrous for America. But your pro-atheist articles/interviews pretty much keep hammering home the same obvious points, in a very self-congratulatory fashion. If you're going to keep running these articles with the same repetitive themes, could you at least find someone with something interesting to say on the subject?

On the upside, at least it wasn't another Salon article on what to do/what not to do with pubic hair.

  • "Average Joe" says Iraq was "worth trying"?

    [Read the article: Scarborough's fair]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

You mean, like a casserole recipe? Another chickenhawk willing to expend other people's blood to test a ludicrous political hypothesis.

Scarborough is no better than any of the other conservative ranters, and shame on Salon for seeing his "Is Bush an idiot?" routine for anything other than what it is: pandering to a base of increasingly frustrated conservatives. Not frustrated that Bush is stupid, or criminal, or shameless, or incompetent, mind you--just frustrated that he's become so unpopular.

That's the only real "principle" conservatives have: Rape the environment, steal from the middle class and poor to give to the rich, get on your back and whore your head off for corporations and special interests, use other people's kids as cannon fodder, but for God's sake keep your image and your approval numbers up. Bush hasn't done that, and they've turned on him. And now they're trying to look smart by dissing him. Too late for that, guys. He's your albatross--you fed him, propped him up, and fobbed him off on the country--and you're stuck with him.
