Republicans get votes because no matter how extreme certain people seem to be, there are millions of people who feel similarly. it's that simple.
After all these years, the Johnson daisy ad finally has a contemporary counterpart. To so blatantly play on people's fears when in fact it is the Republican administration and Congress that have made matters worse for the United States throughout the world is truly embarrassing and shameful.
If terrorism is truly a threat (and I am by no means convinced that it is) to the United States, the GOP has done more to make it so than the Democrats could do in a lifetime.
if the democrats end up retaking the house, i think it'll be because they end up sweeping most or all of the close races.
good grief, people are judgmental.
thank you for sharing your emotional story with us, joyce.
i'd also like to say that i very much liked your book "The Usual Rules", and i see the same voice in your words here that i did in the book.
best wishes to you.
those who post anonymous attack letters are cowards. if you have something negative to say, be a real man or woman and show your name.
futhark--
you would control the personal lives of all people? how utterly foolish. sex is something that's a private decision, not something for a government oversight committee.
every last one of you that does not post your name and posts a personal attack on someone is a coward of the lowest order, and ought to be banned from Salon (if only that were possible).
there are plenty of judgmental mormons out there, just as there are judgmental people of all faiths, creeds and beliefs.
some mormons, particularly those in areas where there is a diversity of opinion, tend to be rather open (relatively speaking) and thoughtful people. others, like people in any faith where there is a monpoly on an area, can be remarkably closed-minded.
every democrat with deep pockets out there should be donating to a key campaign, or to the party itself.
if bush wanted it taken down, it would be down in minutes. just a matter of how much inducement is there.
Many of these generals came of age during the vietnam era, and are seeing it all happen again right before their eyes.
this shows again that that president panders to just a fraction of the overall country. the rest of us are, as always, left high and dry.
Jon Kyl should win arizona, but the wild card is jim pederson's deep pockets. they have enabled him to slam kyl's advertisements back within just a few days (and in high volume), whereas most candidates would have to wait a week or two to do that. if kyl loses, it would be a monumental upset.
pederson ought to pump some of his money into some of the other senate races.
It's almost Orwellian how the bush administration operates. They pursue one course of action for months/years, and now that they've changed, they're working hard to convince people it was never that way at all. Next they'll be saying that war is peace.

They just use smokescreens and hope people are overcome by the fumes enough to believe what they say.
karma is a bitch.
it would be like suddenly redisovering the brake pedal in your car (something that all too many people need to do, by the way).
every time, because they keep getting elected and re-elected.
the politics of perfection are troubling. some of the greatest people who ever lived were not saints, and had indiscretions of some kind in their early years, and sometimes later on as well.
if we limit ourselves only to perfect people, we'll be tossing out some of the best and brightest among us, and the most capable.
based on history (the snorefests from 1988-90 and 1998-200, for example), we're in for a hell of a Series next year.
damn straight, john.
finally, kerry learns how to counterpunch, and hard. just a smattering of that in 2004 would have gotten him into the white house.
i'd love to corner any one of the faceless workers who work on the rnc website and do other technical work and ask them if they really believe the bullshit they post, or if they know it's spun more than someone driving off a cliff.
people, use your brain for just a moment and ask yourself what kerry had to gain by insulting the military. nothing? i thought not.
anyone who interprets his remarks as a shot against the military is, frankly, stupid in an intellectual sense and lacks the ability to reason.
if bush tries to take advantage of kerry's mistake, he'll find out how things would have gone in 2004 had iraq been as bad then as it is now.
turns out that kerry's prepared text, given to reporters beforehand, included the full joke, along with the "get us" part.
so much for pathetic republicans.
it would be difficult to understate how much of an upset a kyl loss would be. being an arizona resident, i can say that kyl has enjoyed tremendous support over the years here, and that pederson isn't a very charismatic or overly great candidate by himself. pederson has also had to deal with the conviction of former state treasurer jim peterson, who has doubtlessly muddled the names in the minds of many voters.
