High-LAIR-ee-us

Oliver Stone thinks that bisexuality ruined "Alexander"? That's so funny! I've invented a drinking game around "Alexander". Players must drink whenever:

1. Angelina Jolie, playing Count Dracula, rolls an "r" so violently that you can almost see the camera shake.

2. Colin Farrell's eyebrows change color or show considerable grow-out.

3. Colin Farrell's hair changes color or shows considerable dark roots.

4. Colin Farrell's chin quivers before he bursts into tears.

5. Colin Farrell lusts after some man/tranny/woman-who-he-thinks-is-a-wild-animal.

Players should not attempt to play this game using hard liquor (I recommend beer), or players will be drunk within a matter of minutes.

Simpering, unrequited bisexual lusting was the least of that movie's problems. And hell - if the male characters had gotten to act upon that lust, I would have enjoyed it! There would have been no need for the drinking game.

It's funny that this movie, Brokeback Mountain, is aimed at women. For weeks, my female coworkers and I have been making lists of the Hollywood actors that we'd like to pair up. I think they hit the nail right on the head - we're suckers for some guy-on-guy action.

Original article: Love your enemies

My "enemies" aren't the problem - it's my fellow Muslims who are pissing me off

As a Muslim, my heart aches every time I see truly good people who lose their lives trying to make a difference in the Muslim world. For a people who are constantly reminding each other about how the world has forgotten them, you would think that Muslims would be a little more grateful of the few brave souls who step up and take a chance ont heir behalf.

It sickens me to hear the varied comments, whether from Rush Limbaugh or some of the idiots on this forum, who either enjoy the spectacle, try to place the blame on someone else (dude, I don't like Bush, either, but seriously, take your meds), or paint all Muslims with the same hateful brush.

However, I don't know what to make of the people with whom I share my faith anymore. Every time someone like Margaret Hassan dies at the hands of my so-called "brothers", a little bit of my faith in God is shattered. I, too, will be praying for Tom Fox and his fellow activists.

James Francis - How about THIS?

How about "your statement is almost too stupid to warrant any kind of response?".

Hello? Common law marriage? Some couple choose not to get married before having children. So, if a man and a woman decide to have kids, but don't believe in marriage, and the guy runs off later with his secretary, then the woman is 100% financially responsible for the children?

Other writers are correct - this is a very gray issue with no happy conclusion that would be comprehensive enough for the world in which we live.

Liza Dalby

And Golden does, in fact, offer sincere thanks to Dalby in the book's credits. It should be noted that Golden's book explores in entirely different cultural time in Japan, and is incredibly valuable, even as a work of fiction.

Mineko Iwasaki, who provided Golden with much of the material he used for his novel (and then later sued him for breech of confidentiality or some such nonsense) has also written about life as a geisha during the 1960s and 1970s, in a memoir called "Geisha: A Life". She's a terrible writer (or maybe the translator was terrible?), very self-serving and spoiled beyond all belief, and the golden era of the geisha was long over before she became a maiko - however, it's another interesting (and entirely Japanese) account of geisha.

Does this make my face look white?

Just so everyone knows, all the big cosmetic companies offer face whitening cream in China. I remember seeing constant Oil of Olay commericals where a lovely teenager with a high-pitched (think helium-sucking) voice would gentle touch her cheek while saying "Ting bai, ting mei" ("So white, so pretty").

Apparently the same is done in India and other parts of Asia where the "hate yourself, buy this cure!" method is preying on post-colonial insecurities. And as far as I can tell, none of these "whitening creams" even contain SPF.

I recall a cosmetic counter sales girl examining my ghostly-white complexion and commenting on how lucky I was. I tried to explain to her that tans were "in" in my country, but she didn't believe me.

Original article: Abortion and trauma

Dear, dear, dear

Is it any surprise that someone would feel more guilt over an abortion than over a miscarriage? And will you stop with the whole "How much more does it suck to ACTUALLY RAISE children" line? Please? Aborting and unwanted child is terrible, as is having to raise one that you don't want, but EVERY GODDAMN TIME someone brings up problems with abortion, someone else has to shout about problems with raising "surprise" kids. We get it, OK?

However, if someone REALLY didn't want a kid, I mean, just couldn't stand the thought, they could give it up for adoption, right? I mean, at least in the US, Canada, and other Western countries.
