I wonder if Keef knows about The Comics Curmudgeon?

Because there are sites (joshreads.com) entirely dedicated to the idea of this strip.

Yikes

Wow, way to be open minded, people.

Look, I sway back and forth between the two candidates, but I'm leaning towards Obama. That doesn't mean that I have to act like a total dickhead to people who support Hillary, does it? You Hillary supporters (and trolls in general) would do well to act like adults.

I don't want anyone to stop going on the Matthews show. What I want is for someone to be ready to be incredibly condescending back to him, to shout over him, to talk him down. Just like Chris Dodd did on O'Reilly.

My dog had a facelift

One thing I find interesting is what the vet told the author about what they do with animals when the owners can't afford the treatment - they treat the animal and then give it to a good home? I don't know - doesn't it seem better to perhaps charge less for a treatment? Or let the owner take part in a payment plan of some kind? Rather than sending an animal to a new home?

Whatevs

"Less than 1,000 calories per day" should be "fewer than 1,000 calories per day."

Sure, whatever. Most people I know accept both usages. That's the beauty of language change.

I don't really care if meat eaters are offended when they pick up this book and find out that animal cruelty DOES exist in our current food production methods. As someone who vacillates between vegetarianism and bouts of meat-consumption, I can see both sides to the argument. But as someone who has read a wide variety of vegan literature, I can testify that there is nothing more obnoxious than a smug vegan. Except maybe a smug carnivore.

In response to 565656565656

I think the difference between illiterate then and illiterate now is that back THEN, the literate elite were respected. Now, they are mocked.

No, really, tell him to fuck off or leave him

Honestly, honey, perhaps it's been said, but for me, this has been a sure-fire trait of abusive men in my life.

Been there

You haven't lived until you've seen "Surviving the Game" (which, incidentally, was filmed in my hometown) dubbed in Uyghur, as you hide out in your Chinese apartment in the dead of a Xinjiang winter.

Don't put too much pressure on yourself. And don't feel bad about cavorting around with other non-Europeans. Once you're ready to branch out, you'll get there.

Ha! I'm never shocked

I'm never shocked when I learn that a politician has done something seedy. I AM shocked that people like Clinton and Spitzer make it so EASY for others to catch them and take them down. It's not that I think liberals are less prone to sins of the flesh, it's just that I always believe that they're going to be smarter about indulging, since they realize that so many people are out to get them.

This was a valuable interview

Thanks for doing this, Salon. I was hesitant to read, but now I'm glad I did. I don't agree with all that was said, but Hedges raises some interesting questions, issues that I've been considering.

Bah

"In fact the Quran recognizes Christians and Jews as "people of scripture" and only urges the early Muslims to fight back against the militant "infidels" or polytheists who were trying to wipe them out."

Nice apologist idea. But since the passage is used as an excuse for horrible atrocities against Christians and Jews TO THIS VERY DAY, it really doesn't matter what the Qur'an MEANS to say. What matters is what people WANT IT to say.

Oh, please

I emailed this video to everyone I knew last night when I found it on copyranter - I thought it was adorable. First, the beaver is hilariously cute, and second, it's clever. Americans are so squeamish about bleeding vaginas that you'd think we'd be pleased with the work-around found here.

And this is your business how?

Oooh, ooh, I just LOVE commenting on people's personal choices! Nothing makes me feel better than to offer my unsolicited opinion on a couple's personal choice to start a family.

It's pronounced "idiotic", brightstar

Not "vitriolic". But I can see how you might get the two confused.

Monday, March 17, 2008 03:57 PM

Yay, Greeneyedkzin and pendragon3

I went to Mount Holyoke, and appreciate the two of you explaining your opinions on this topic. Unlike you, I actually no longer see the value in single-sex education at the college level. Not for the reasons that brightstar and Jim bring up (the usual drivel about feminists sucking and whatnot), but because I really didn't find that the experience of being surrounded by women for four years was particularly helpful.

I still consider myself a feminist, and don't feel comfortable calling for the end to the all-women's institutions.

I don't recall having any actual transmen on campus, although we certainly had more than enough women who you would never know were women. I figure it's more or less the same, isn't it?

Monday, March 17, 2008 04:44 PM

Addendum

Also, it should be mentioned that women's colleges are hardly free of male presence. Professors, staff, attendees' boyfriends and family members... each dorm also had some sort of adult supervisor, frequently a female but occasionally a male-female or gay male couple. Men from the rest of the Five Colleges attended our classes, and I took courses at Amherst and UMass. A friend of mine and I were just gabbing about this article and she said, "Considering all of that, who cares if you throw a couple of transdudes into the mix?"

My dad considered trading me for a leather vest in Tijuana. And yes, that will be the first line in the first country song that I ever write.

Wow

This is probably the first time I've ever agreed with Cary.

There's nothing worse than being the beck and call girl (well, ok, there are worse things, but it sucks). Stop it. Don't see him as often. Pull back. I know it sounds like The Rules, and it kind of is.

Yikes

Whitney: I'm sure that Paris is full of guys who are cooler than Brody.

Is it a bad sign that I didn't initially understand that Whitney was talking about the city in Europe. And I was like "Wow. Harsh, but true."
