But the Old Testament IS violent

No one is accusing modern day Jews of being bloodthirsty beasts. The Old Testament IS horribly violent. As is the Qur'an. Listen to Julia Sweeney's "Letting Go of God" monologue, and you'll realize that the New Testament isn't exatly all roses and daisies.

The thing I thought was interesting about this article was that it seems as thought the author believes that Bush felt like 9/11 was the impetus for goign to war in Iraq. Anyone who was paying attention in the early days of the Bush administration would remember that 9/11 was the EXCUSE - Bush had planned to kill Sadaam from the moment he was elected. It's all about his daddy.

Gadjo Dilo - 1997 - Lion's

Another great film by the director of Latcho Drom - although the main actress is not Romani, which is kind of unfortunate, she is stunningly beautiful. The music is heartwrenching and gorgeous.

That said, I cannot imagine wanting to travel to find today's Romani. As a mysterious people of undecided origins (India, probably), today's European Rom are interesting. But as with any group of desperately poor and uneducated people, you have to watch yourself in their villages. This obviously doesn't apply to the world of online Rom accountants, but I would advise anyone taken with the "romantic" idea of traveling with the Rom to think twice about it.

Original article: On to Iran?

Humilitating? Wouldn't that mean that he has some humility?

The President is not humiliated when he says that the Iraq war situation is unacceptable to him. Our President is not humiliated, not ever, because of his simple ability to never treat reality as something to be considered. By saying "unacceptable" the President is merely condescending to pretend that he cares about what the American people think and want. By ignoring the results of the last election, the recommendations of his military generals, and of Iraq Study Group, Bush has once again proved that he has no desire to listen to anything but the voices in his head - and those voices tell him that God is on his side, that history will honor his memory, and that he can never admit defeat.

The same goes for his "taking responsibility" for the quagmire that is Iraq. He doesn't take responsibility. He doesn't lose sleep at night. He does care, because NONE OF IT sinks in.

Ha! You guys beat me to it

"As nice as it is to see so many female-dominated comedies on the air these days, it's a little sad that women have to be referred to as desperate, ugly, old or stoned to catch our attention."

Seriously, if every woman-dominated TV show featured teeny, tiny supermodels, would you be as irked? My god, woman, can ANYONE make you happy?

I get a kick out of the slide show

Read the linked article and accompanying slide show. I get a kick out of the second slide, whcih reads: "In Australia, the beach is part of life. But Muslim women had to trudge through the sand in full-length dresses and robes." The accompanying picture shows what is probably a teenage girl from behind - wearing hijab and skintight jeans.

Say what you will about hijab, at least it's flexible. But I agree with the other poster - I'd take a nude beach over a wetsuit anyday. At least, in Australia.

A little late, but

I'm missing the relevance of mentioning that the party was thrown by a Marine?

I've only had raw milk once

In Japan, of all places. Raw, whole milk, ice cold, from the cows that were grazing outside in an alpine meadow, high in the moutains. I have not tasted anything so completely pure, satisfying, and delicious since then.

I dunno

The more I drive around the Seattle, the more I wish women weren't allowed to drive. Does that make me self-loathing?

Original article: Joe Biden's Obama drama

There's articulate, and then there's articulate

When people talk about Obama being articulate, I don't think that they mean that he knows how to use big words or think clearly. They mean that he doesn't "talk black".

Tavis Smiley is articulate. But a lot of white people don't listen to him, because he speaks Black English. The accent, the phrasing, the enunciation of certain diphthongs that don't exist in Standard American English, using tems like "brotha" when addressing his show's guests - these are things that non-Black Americans often find off-putting. They associate Black English with a lack of intelligence or articulateness.

Let's be fair - most Black Americans that are featured prominently in the public eye are professional athletes. Athletes are rarely articulate, regardless of race, and if you are a non-Black American living in an area with very few Blacks, and most Black people that you have "Contact" with are football players, then someone like Kobe Bryant or Colin Powell or Barack Obama - very educated Black men who don't "talk Black", it comes as a pleasant surprise. This may be naive and indirectly insulting, but it's how many people feel.

When I first read Biden's quote, I thought it was meant to be sarcastic. So this is kind of disappointing.

Maybe she and Condi can get together

And they can talk about how they are allowed to affect laws and public (and international policy) depsite not having children to pour shampoo down the drain. Because you should only be allowed to do those things if you have children. Childless women should be kept away from writing laws that affect children, families, or humans in general. Obviously.

I'm you, but 10 years younger

Wow, been there, done that. Wait, still doing it. Even thought 'rents (Korean, this time, but I had a Chinese boyfriend before) have warmed up to me, there are still issues with diluting that lovely Asian gene pool with my nasty whiteness.

East Asians are probably among the most racist people on Earth, but even his cold-hearted parents will eventually come around. It just takes time.

FYI, as someone who lived in China and studied Chinese, his parents will like you a lot more if you learn Chinese. Not exactly a little known fact, but hard to consider. I mean, they might never warm up, but you will have gained a valuable skill.
