I really enjoy reading your reviews. Probably because I agree with them. Mad Men was just fabulous to watch and your hit on the emmy's was right on the button. Outside of Friday Night Lights many of the best shows are not on network but on cable like "The Wire" a show I've watched every year. It's right up there with the Sopranos. I can't get into John of Cincinnati either. Awaiting more reviews.
I read the NY Times today with such chagrin. It's as if the shift in the balance in Congress had never occured. I called the Washington office of Cong. Gerald Nadler of NY who was mentioned in the article and while I'm not a constituent of his I am a in a district that abuts his. It was early in the day but I certainly let my feelings about the cowardice of the Dems known to his staff. He is one of the better members and I thought it important that at least he know about the feelings back home. I enjoy reading your columns, even though they mostly upset me. Keep on writing.
Bravo, as usual you hit the nail right on the head. How did all this happen. I'm in my mid 60's and this seems like the McCarthy era redux. I support the Senator's hold and responded to his email on Thursday. I called Senator Schumer's office yesterday to tell him what I thought, I'm a New Yorker and he's on the judiciary committee as well as taking your advice and calling Harry Reid's office and leaving him a message. I read somewhere on line that Joe Biden would also support the hold. I suppose I should also try Hillary Clinton's office as well. Most days I read you on line though it's hard to see what this country as turned into.
Do you think the current fires that have been raging in Southern California will have any affect on the proposal?
Tony Leung is not only a great actor but when he was younger he was a PRETTY BOY. The first film I saw him in was "The Lover" directed by Anaund set in Indo-China in the 1920's It was an English language film about a Chinese businessman falling in love with a very young french schoolgirl. I've never forgotten the film or him. It was based on a semi autographical story by Marguirte Duras. I'm so glad you included him in your list.
Not being a Catholic I don't know if that cuts as much ice with Catholic or none Catholic voters as in the past. However, might not Italian Americans take pride in having and Itlo-American be President? They obviously don't make up the population of Hispanic Americans but they tend to be Catholic and the thrust of your article almost seemed to focus on Irish Catholics and Hispanic Catholics. Maybe you've never seen a Columbus Day Parade.
I mostly agree with your assessment of David Shuster. He more than most of the TV people seen on MSNBC seems almost like a "real journalist" rather than a TV personality. Being of a certain age I was surprised to hear the word "pimped out" referring to Chelsea Clinton. However, she does seem to be surrounded in kind of a bubble. I've never seen her give press interviews the way Michelle Obama has. She's a 27 year old woman who seems to be shielded like the little girl she was when the Clinton's entered the White house. That was a very vulgar phrase he used but I think he was getting to a larger point. They use people. The Clinton's were angry with the criticism and then used it politically. That's what they do.
When I first saw that comment on TV I didn't even understand what that dummy was talking about. At first I thought was Tiger Woods endorsing Obama? It was only when the Senator from S.C., Lindsay Graham spoke and tried to cover over a bigoted remark that I realized what an idiot the introducer was. Shame on you Senator McCain, you seem to be supported by a host of religious lunatics and bigots. Senator Graham is not included in that group. That guy is going to have a tough time getting elected in New York and it's not because he's a Republican. It's because he's STUPID.
I take some exception with your Clinton statement made in SF to support Bob Casey in Pa and then Casey supported Obama. Perhaps you aren't aware that Obama endorsed and campaigned with Casey in Pa the year he was running against Santorium. I am a liberal Democrat in NY but I held my nose and gave a contribution to Casey, albeit a small one due to my circumstances because I knew what a horror Santorium was and he was maybe on a Republican glidepath to the Presidency. Also, you seem to overlook the fact that over one million individuals contributing less than $200 gave money to Obama. I agree with you on one thing, San Francisco shouldn't take the hit when so many other people in states, cities and towns have supported Obama with their money and votes.
I'd be curious to know if Joan Walsh ever reads your columns?
The reason I ask is because she seems to make similar points about how important these gotcha questions are.
The one truly astonishing bit of information that could be gleaned from that so called debate was that Hillary Clinton if President was going to give all countries in the middle east military cover from IRAN. That should have been the lead out of the debate.
