Really? Did we see the same speech? Maybe Traister really got lost in the crowd (isn't that a journalistic sin?) because the speech I saw was a series of old stale sound bites delivered in the most mechanical of tones. The CNN audio, which seemed to have some kind of metalic reverb under it, made her sound like a robot. And if we are going to canditates by speeches and parties, Obama seems to have that wrapped up.
Mr Tennis, this is NOT 1917! What a misplaced vision of Ivy League GRADUATE education!
Two points. First, while it is certainly true that many of the Ivy League undergrads are Blue Bloods, this is not the case for graduate students--and most certainly not those in the Humanities. Don't get me wrong, as a PhD from a state school, I hate the Ivies. Not, however, because of their demographics. Second, I hate the Ivies because so many people, apparently including Mr Tennis, have the wrong idea of what they represent. They do not provide the best higher education, merely the most prominent names in higher education. A degree from Princeton just carries more weight than one from Penn State. This is, unfortunately, even true among academics who recognize that the academics in the Ivies teach and research the same way that everyone else does.
So, if the Ivies is where he wants to be, then go for it.
Much of the initial coverage about Fort Hood turned out to be wrong. Is there anything wrong with that?
