fyi -- since NBC bought the rights to this movie, it's only played once a season by them (twice at the outside) with commericals. Unfortunately.
The people here slamming Waldman for no good reason need to get a grip. A boycott? Have you happened to notice we're about to get a very frightening addition to the Supreme Court? You might want to redirect some of that activist energy toward something that matters. I like Aldman's pieces -- everything I read does not have to be earth-shattering to be worthwhile.
re: JT Leroy...personally I think it's more a story for celebs than anyone else. Most of us did not spend hours -- or even minutes -- talking to the guy/gal. The Frey thing is a bigger deal because of the Oprah push, but honestly, that's much ado about nothing as well. So he was in jail 3 days instead of 3 months...so he liked a girl who died from afar rather than up close. Does that make him a "fraud?" Overblown, overblown. Eggers headed off this sort of criticism by saying up front that you can read it as fiction if you like, but this is the story of his life. How many times have you read a newspaper article where you personally knew the truth of the story and have been appalled at the number of flat-out factual errors that it included? If all SG could find after an exhaustive search were those elements of the story, I'd say Frey did a reasonable job keeping to the "facts."
Thank you for pointing out the most horrifying aspect of watching Private Practice - the cringe-inducing transform of the only grown-up on Grey's (other than Miranda) into an insecure, inarticulate mess, suddenly unable to even walk without tripping or catching her clothes in the car door. What the hell are the producers thinking???? Have they not watched their own character on Grey's? Do they not understand that the reason Addison went from a 6-episode story arc to a full cast member is that Kate Walsh was terrific as the person with not only a brain but emotional maturity - a trait lacking in nearly every other character on Grey's. C'mon people - get it together, or Private Practice is gong to fail miserably. Grey's can get away with much of that nonsense because the characters are (or were) first-year interns. We don't want to see it in veteran doctors.
And we don't want to see Judge Amy in that ridiculous role either, btw. I hope she was only a pilot fill-in.
I'm another one rooting for the FBI-bound Veronica... hopefully she can bring Dad along in one way or another.
Not nearly enough outrage here about Veronica Mars. The CW fast-forwards "One Tree Hill" (Thomas's idea for VM) and then cancels the only decent show they have outside of "Chris" -- they are out of their minds! The reason I started watching VM, btw, is because of the recs here. I'm terribly sad that it's gone.
That's really a new low. The way this article is framed from beginning to end is insulting. Joan Walsh -- what can you be thinking?
Do you really have to reinforce such an inaccuracy, even with the "qualifier" around it?
I really liked the first episode of Reaper -- so much so that I actually put it on DVD so a friend could watch the pilot. The second, episode, though was more disappointing. I guess seeing the same thing every week is going to get old fast. The show has a "Ghostbusters" feel to it, which is great a couple of times, but probably not every week. I like the new "vessel" a week idea, though. What will it be this week??
I LOVE Mad Men -- love, love, love. I am so sorry there are only two episodes left, which means we'll have to wait 9+ months for the next new show. This is going to be a great one to watch in repeats, though... there is a lot to catch the second time around.
My favorite show right now, by far (even more than Weeds and Dexter, the next two on the list). One thing it does brilliantly is upending the cliche, going in exactly the opposite direction than you'd expect. The writers have done this again and again -- and deliberately. Everyone thought Draper was going to pull a gun on his brother, because they wanted us to think that. Then he pulled out money. Everyone thought Pete was going to steal Peggy's copy as his own... again, nope. Then last week, who could have predicted that Rachel would flip when Draper asked her to run away with him -- isn't that what she seemed to want mere hours earlier?
Peggy's weight is not the actress's (I saw a photo of her from Wed, and she's quite normal). I agree with those who say she's using it as a defense mechanism against the rampant sexism of the day, though I'm sure we'll find out more this week. (And in another instance of avoiding cliche, the otherwise sympathetic Peggy was a terrible human being to her date... she's multi-dimensional, like everyone else).
So sad we'll have to wait 9 months for the next season!
The arrogance of this article is staggering. I wonder if there is a correlation between the arrogance of holier-than-thou American marathoners and the slowed time of all Americans. Perhaps if you worried more about yourself than what others do with their free time, you could help lower the average time.
Thanks, Salon, for another wonderful piece.
Good liberals keep going after one another. I suppose it's the primary season, but still, not pretty.
Joan Walsh finds "disturbing" things in Obama's speech, most importantly that he compared the fear and resentments of an elderly white woman (his grandmother) to the fear and resentments of an elderly black man (his former pastor). Who could ever have guessed Walsh would take that position??
