Original article: The king of beer mergers

InBev Makes Stella?

Whenever a Brit tries to tell me how nasty Budweiser is, I point out that Stella Artois, the best selling beer in the UK, is ten times the pisswater.

Though InBev's Hoegaarden isn't that bad on tap, and Beck's and Bass are certainly better than Budweiser.

Bud Light is my go-to beach beer- it's better than any other accessible light beer that comes in a can and I typically drink a case or so of beer during a day on the beach- and I've always preferred the way they do business in comparison to their nearest competitors. Really a shame to see them go under and take another blue collar American city with them.

And to defend by beer cred to a bunch of online strangers, note that I typically give away any Bud Light anyone leaves in my fridge. It's beach beer only...

bungo pony

Yes, Louisiana has schools, including some excellent teachers such as my wife. Some of us have fought and are fighting tooth and nail against this kind of nonsense, but the northern/Baptist part of the state, which is in the Bible Belt, keeps it going strong.

Not to mention the fact that our Democratic leadership was gutted after Katrina, guaranteeing positions for wonderful folk like Bobby Jindal and David Vitter.

But hey, go ahead and roll around in your stereotypes of these har Southern yokels. Really, it makes you just as ignorant of reality as the morons trying to teach our kids about a 6,000 year old earth.

"Louisiana is two states. The upstate rock rib Protestant (fundies) and the freewheelin saints and sinnin New Orleans Catholics replete with adultery, homosexuality, gambling, drinking and general licentiousness.

If Jindal thinks that God Created the Heavens and the Earth, it's probably so that man could create the drive through Daiquiri stand, hookers, crawdads, bourbon and quail shooting."

Exactly. I abandoned the Northern Baptist part of the state where I grew up for the hedonistic Catholic South several years ago and haven't looked back. It's still very conservative in the south, but Creationism doesn't fly with the average person around here. Some of it's because of the Catholicism, some of it's that the major LA schools- Tulane and LSU- are in the south and tend to fight off this kind of nonsense.

So Bungo Pony, I apologize for the harsh words. I'm not typically one to care about South jokes (which are mostly deserved) but sometimes I bite. And unfortunately, I've got no current desire to live somewhere without drive-thru daiquiri stands and crawfish boils.

Though the margin of 94-3 just boggles the mind. What a bunch of idiots.

Don't Worry About Jindal

He's mouthing off now because he has lost so much respect due to his approval of the legislative pay raise, which effectively doubled the salaries of every member of the Louisiana legislature. There are currently protests all over the state and he's being actively booed and called a "back-stabber" everywhere he sets foot. Local conservative talk radio hosts have even started calling him "One Term Jindal."

So yes, this is all just a way to talk tough and save face during his most unpopular period so far in his tenure. I've got serious doubts about his chances for reelection, as the Louisiana people feel that, by and large, he's turned his back on his hardcore supporters by slacking on his reform platform, going to play Vice Presidential Hopeful on Leno while former governor Edwin Edwards' old cronies run the state, and the aforementioned approval of the ridiculous pay raises.

@ moriganna

"and if you're wrongly convicted, can you sue to get your testicles back? that's one of the reasons the supreme court ruled out the death penalty in these cases. because wrongful convictions happen, and when the emotional impact of possible violence to a young child is factored in, mistakes or just plain witch hunts are much more likely. mcmartin preschool scandal, anyone?"

From what I understand, the convicted have to REQUEST physical castration. Otherwise they're given the chemical castration. I'm not sure how permanent it is, but it can't be good for the system, I'm sure.

Also, it should definitely be noted:

This bill was conceived of and put forth by Nick Gautreaux, a Louisiana Democrat.

Elephantman

Word is that Obama views Louisiana as a state worth fighting for this year. It could possibly be that since, as I mentioned before, this bill was put forth by Democratic State Senator Nick Gautreaux and was certainly supported by Senator Mary Landrieu, Obama is just trying to win over the state and make it a battleground for McCain.

Just speculation, though, and I haven't liked his veering toward Right lately, either...

"Besides, everyone would be better off eating less sugar."

Everyone would be better off eating MORE sugar and less HFCS. It's far healthier and tastes much better. Have you ever had a Dr. Pepper or Jones soda made with cane sugar? Or ice cream (if my fellow south Louisianan Stephen Hermann gets Kleinpeter, he knows what I’m talking about)? It’s not the syrupy garbage you get at McDonald’s, to be sure.

I agree that we’ve got plenty of sugar cane right down here. Why go straight to Cuba? Is this more the fault of our Cuban policy or our corn policy?
