Watch as the Supreme Court takes away your rights

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that police, under certain circumstances, can initiate an interrogation of a suspect without the defendant's lawyer being present.

By a 5-4 vote, the conservative majority overruled a 23-year-old Supreme Court decision that barred the police from initiating questioning after a defendant asserted the right to an attorney at an arraignment or similar proceeding.

The California Supreme Court takes away our right to marry and the US Supreme Court takes away another right

To the people that assume Sotomayor is liberal because she is latino

70% of US Latinos are catholic (from the Washington Post).....and we all know how liberal the catholic church is.

These are probably the same people that assumed Obama would be liberal because he is half black.

When did the US Supreme Court become the Vatican west ?

We already have 5 Supreme Court justices who are catholic, she would be the 6th.

This is hardly representative of the population as a whole (which is the excuse her supporters use......she should be confirmed because there is only 1 woman on the bench).

"As a federal appeals court judge in 2002, she (Sotomayor) ruled against an abortion rights group that had challenged a government policy prohibiting foreign organizations receiving U.S. funds from performing or supporting abortions." MSNBC

A meaningful discussion ???

Oh you mean how best to take away our constitutional rights...

And you can thank Obama who actively campaigned the Supreme Court for this verdict.

Meanwhile Obama is trying to put the 6th Catholic on the 9 member US Supreme Court

thereby ensuring that our equal rights stay many years away.

Being catholic is like being pregnant

you either are or your not.......spare me the I'm a catholic but don't go to mass rationalization !!

Get out your beads and your bibles

In a religious freedom case, Sotomayor backed two New York state prison inmates in 1994 who practiced the religion Santeria and challenged a prison rule that banned them from wearing multicolored religious beads.

Sotomayor, ruling that the pair could wear the beads under their clothing, criticized as intolerable "distinctions which favor 'traditional' over 'nontraditional' religions."

She also struck down a White Plains, N.Y., law preventing the display of religious symbols such as a 9-foot-high menorah in a city park.

Which is exactly what this nomination is all about

pandering to the Latino community and the Catholics.

Tuesday, May 26, 2009 04:27 PM

Any religious display on any public grounds violates the constitution

but I don't expect Obama supporters to understand that.....pandering to the religious right is what got Obama elected.

And by the way, being catholic is like being pregnant.....you either are or your not. Spare me the I am catholic but I don't go to mass rationalization.

Tuesday, May 26, 2009 04:44 PM

just to clarify

by public grounds I mean any property owned by the government....not necessarily any ground that happens to be public.

I think most would understand what I meant but you can never underestimate the religious fanatics.

Your not too cynical bystander

your just seeing Obama for who and what he really is.

re: The Unlovely Truth

I get the same image of Obama in a couple of years, when people finally realize just how conservative he really is and most of the white liberals who voted for him stop believing the hype....will they realize then how much he has betrayed them?

Tuesday, May 26, 2009 05:03 PM

Well the catholic church just helped take away my right to get married so I'm a little pissed

as for a totalitarian future.....Obama supports the kidnapping, torture, and indefinite detention of any person in the world.

Obama just successfully lobbied the Supreme Court to reverse a 23 year old decision that requires a lawyer present during questioning.

I'd say your totalitarian future is already here.

re: student_on_the_rebound

I highly doubt any cop any where would get spat upon and not arrest the person who did it.....just touching a police officer is grounds to be arrested.

Tuesday, May 26, 2009 05:59 PM

or Catholic !!!!!

Sotomayor would be the 6th catholic on a 9 member court.....when exactly does the pope move into the white house?
