Once again, Paul Krugman proves he's the best spokesperson for health care reform -- and he does it by exposing the flawed thinking of some Senate Democrats:
The real risk is that health care reform will be undermined by “centrist” Democratic senators who either prevent the passage of a bill or insist on watering down key elements of reform. I use scare quotes around “centrist,” by the way, because if the center means the position held by most Americans, the self-proclaimed centrists are in fact way out in right field.
What the balking Democrats seem most determined to do is to kill the public option, either by eliminating it or by carrying out a bait-and-switch, replacing a true public option with something meaningless. For the record, neither regional health cooperatives nor state-level public plans, both of which have been proposed as alternatives, would have the financial stability and bargaining power needed to bring down health care costs.
Whatever may be motivating these Democrats, they don’t seem able to explain their reasons in public.
Krugman deconstructs the blather coming from Senators Ben Nelson (D-NE) and Kent Conrad (D-ND), concluding:
Honestly, I don’t know what these Democrats are trying to achieve. Yes, some of the balking senators receive large campaign contributions from the medical-industrial complex — but who in politics doesn’t? If I had to guess, I’d say that what’s really going on is that relatively conservative Democrats still cling to the old dream of becoming kingmakers, of recreating the bipartisan center that used to run America.
But this fantasy can’t be allowed to stand in the way of giving America the health care reform it needs. This time, the alleged center must not hold.
Something happens on Capitol Hill that makes people lose all sense of reality. As Chris noted yesterday, the latest NY Times/CBS poll showed "72% support" for the public option. That's very significant. But, Democratic Senators, like Ben Nelson, Kent Conrad, Max Baucus, Joe Lieberman and Mary Landrieu, would rather make friends with Republicans than provide the American people a decent system for health insurance. That's despicable -- and they're going to undermine a key piece of the Democratic agenda. The American people actually expect elected officials to deliver on campaign promises.
I call justice.
Because prior to Obama the democrats were actually different from the republicans and couldn't be counted on to betray the history of their own party....but now that's not a problem.
Yeah and the Germans were just Nazis in name only.
Don't know about you but any organization that campaigns to take away other peoples rights and interferes with governments around the world on a daily basis is fanatical.
Roe v. Wade will be overturned.
I quit going to the Huffington site during the democratic primary when I pointed out they had 3 anti Bill Clinton articles on the front page and he wasn't even running for anything.
After that, they stopped publishing my letters.
like the other politicians??
At least 43 people have died in missile strikes by a US drone aircraft in a militant stronghold of Pakistan, a Taliban spokesman has told the BBC.
The people killed in South Waziristan had been attending the funeral of a militant commander who had been killed in an earlier strike.
A Mehsud spokesman told the BBC that 43 people, including five militants, had been killed in the missile strikes. He said that many more had been injured, some seriously.

White House Announces Troubling Faith-Based Order, ACLU Says Administration Is Heading Into Uncharted Waters (2/5/2009)

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama announced today that he is taking the unprecedented and troubling step of forming a federal advisory committee to be made up mostly of religious leaders. Also of great concern, President Obama will increase federal funds going to religious organizations without first changing the Bush-era rules allowing federally-funded religious organizations to apply religious hiring tests to employees.
"President Obama launched his faith-based initiative today by heading into uncharted and dangerous waters," said Caroline Fredrickson, Director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office. "What we are seeing today is significant - a president giving his favored clergy a governmental stamp of approval. There is no historical precedent for presidential meddling in religion – or religious leaders meddling in federal policy – through a formal government advisory committee made up mostly of the president's chosen religious leaders."
Today's announcement included the appointment of 25 members of a government advisory committee that will be dominated by religious leaders. The mission of the government committee will be to advise the president and the White House faith-based office on how to distribute federal dollars, and also advise on a range of other issues such as AIDS and women's reproductive health care. Although former President George W. Bush gave prominence to his faith-based initiative and informally consulted with individual religious leaders, even he never formed a government advisory committee made up primarily of clergy.
Maybe more people will start judging Obama based on his policies, instead of the color of his skin or his pretty lies.
then I guess your right.
