Good Advice - Pity Yourself
[Read the article: I secretly hate myself]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Cary did it again. What good advice.
There is a huge group of people of the "buck up", "get over yourself", "stop whining" school of thought. If you tell them your problems they will tell you about someone who has it worse so you have no right to pity yourself.
Well, LW, don't listen to those people even in your head.
Go to your room, and think about the sadness of your childhood and cry. Cry about the mom you really wanted and never had.
I had wonderful, hardworking parents but there were a number of sad, scarring incidences in my childhood when I was in fourth grade. It was the start of periods of extreme self-loathing.
At the great age of 40 I allowed my self to cry about those experiences. I really pitied myself. It really helped. But as everyone says it is a process. So whenever I felt bad about myself I start looking at myself trying to get at the voices that are making me hate myself -trying to see in my mind where they are coming from. It always led back to the young child I was in fourth grade trying to deal with a situation all by myself.
My periods of active self loathing are gone now. There are periods now when I am dissatisfied with myself but who isn't.

Karl Rove is kinder to Hillary

Can it be that he realizes that the kind of personal Hillary bashing that CP indulges in is self-defeating for the Republicans.
It may also be self-defeating for Obama lovers.
BTW, I am old enough and have been through enough to know that the honeymoon will eventually be over. I like Obama - he is fresh and idealistic. Give him more years in national politics and he will be as tired and wrinkled and compromised as Hillary.
I want just a couple of things from the next President - getting out of Iraq - catch and kill bin Laden - Health care for all citizens - serious attention paid to our environment - restoration of constitutional government.
I don't care if the person is cynical, Machiavellian, or egotistical. I am all those things so I don't mind them.
I don't care if we have 4 more years of bipartisan rancor and hateful spewing from the right wing. I can successfully ignore that for 4 years.
I think CP is more concerned with the "narative" than with our actual country.
For all her talk of her love for "the people" - well it comes across as condescending.

Thanks for sharing
[Read the article: I'm a suburban husband in my 40s and I think I'm getting depressed]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Cary,
I haven't read the actual letter yet. I just read your "summing up". I also wondered about the vicious, negative letters you and other writers get. I also wonder about comments that complain about you (and other writers) being "narcisstic" and "self involved" when you write about their own experiences.
I've always enjoyed reading about other people's experiences. In fact, when reading all the advice given I always give more authority to those who describe in detail going through a similar experience. I enjoy hearing about the details of other peoples lives. That is why I read.
So you and all other writers who like share the details, emotions, and feeling in your lives please continue doing so.
And I thank you.
