As other people have pointed out millions of people have sat in Catholic pews (including me) for years. They've listened to the sermons and homilies their priests have given.
Oftentimes these are anti-abortion creeds. And they got on for 15, 20 minutes at a time. They're usually more oblique, they usually cite the Gospel first, and then talk about the importance of protecting young life. They often cite Jesus' "Let the children come to me." But there are lines in there, that I've heard my priest say like, "It is important to protect all life, the children and the unborn." I disagree with him. But again I don't walk out.
I'm pro-choice. Over half the people in my Church are. We don't get up and leave. Why? Because we're able to separate our PERSONAL and our RELIGIOUS beliefs. Anyone who can't do this is seriously disturbed.
The same go for Republican Catholics. Almost all of them are pro-death penalty. I've heard my priest speak out against the death penalty. And none of the Republicans I know, many of whom have told me they support the death penalty, stood up and walked out.
You have to separate personal and religious beliefs.
I know everyone thinks I'm just being some, stubborn, unintelligent moron but where's the evidence that his hurts Barack Obama.
The Wright issue and "Bittergate" both broke in Pennsylvana. What was the net result? Barack Obama went into PA 20 points down and ended up losing by only 10. That's making up ground. Period.
He did better with white men, better with working class whites, and better with seniors than he did in Ohio pre-Wright and pre-"Bittergate." (Note he did even better with these groups in Wisconsin, Maryland, Iowa, Virginia and Missouri all swing states. Obama's lead over McCain in most of these states, especially Missouri, Virginia and Wisconsin has only GROWN while Hillary continues to trail McCain by huge margins in these states.)
Just because we THINK something hurts someone or we KNOW it must do some damage does not make it so.
Many voters have far more important, overriding issues in their lives like Iraq, the economy, food prices, gas prices and a government that seems to no longer work for them.
Also some (not all) of these people whom the Wright statements most bother, as evidenced here, are either ALREADY Hillary or McCain supporters. A few of them would not vote for a black candidate no matter what, so where does it actually HURT Obama?
That's why this is not the HUGE story the media makes it out to be. They operate on innuendo instead of fact.
There is also no evidence it is hurting Obama among independents. So again what is the continuing point of this story? Other than to tell us what we already know and spread more of what the media thinks is important and what they care about covering.
The American people, as proven by the overwhelming response to the ABC Debate embarassment and the immediate fall in the ratings on George Stephanopoulos' This Week Sunday Show on ABC, are not only aware of it but no longer willing to stand for it.
Do you honestly think anyone's still paying attention to this? It's 9:44 p.m. in Indiana, 10:45 in North Carolina on a MONDAY!
Do any of you men and women in the press, who apparently have the attention span of a 5-year old and the level of interest in petty crap of a high schooler, have any idea what your average person is doing today?
They're buying dinner, trying to do the bills, figuring out how they're going to schedule their kids' soccer practice, probably handling some minor to major health care issue (sick parent, kid needs braces, unexpected surgery for them), helping the kids finish their homework, and in a few unfortunate cases worrying about a loved one in Iraq.
If you think they have the time or luxury to waste on this made-up crap you keep emphasizing your fucking nuts.
And Joan, this is why my first post in your Reverend Wright thread was entitled, "CALM DOWN."
I'm sorry but haven't we known about Wright for almost a month now? What nuclear bomb dropped today that sent all of you into a feeding frenzy? He addressed some NAACP meeting. Great. I bet you 9 out of 10 Americans don't even know that happened.
Again what made today, suddenly out of nowhere, D-Day for the mainstream media and Wright. I honestly don't get it.
