stand up for yourself (and get a lawyer)

The reason there are so many evil people doing so very well is that good people don't stand up to them. These people are evil -- you should stand up to them.

First, talk to a lawyer. Find out what you can do. Find out from him if you should talk to your landlord.

Once you're fortified, talk to them. I'd be as threatening as you can within the limits of the law. Remember, these people are criminals, not legally perhaps but morally.

I'd point out to them that this is going to be a bad scene for them if they stay; that you won't be considerate to the child or to them; that if they do one thing wrong to the child, you'll sic the authorities on them.

Get a lock on the bedroom. If you own the fridge, put a lock on that. If you own a TV, put a lock on THAT.

It sucks for the kid. But generally I find that evil parents have evil children so don't get too bent out of shape for them.

If you're strong, you'll prevail, and you won't have to undergo the extra trauma and stress that a move entails. Plus you'll have extra moxie by having defeated the forces of evil.

Best of luck!

Original article: "Broken Government"

It is my belief...

... that the Bush administration has broken all branches of the government; that if ever competent people regain control they will discover that whole departments of the government have been stripped, looted, the most competent workers forced to leave, run by political cronies whose only interest is in looting the Treasury.

Thanks for an excellent article that unfortunately seems to corroborate my fears.

A "liberal Republican"?

Um, first question -- did he vote for Bush in 2004? Then give him the heave-ho!

Generally, if you're dating someone who really cares about your past female lovers in a negative way -- give them the boot. Do you need such losers?

The "what about a threesome" comment is predictable and basically indicates a straight guy who's trying to play along -- I don't think it indicates anything bad. It's an honest comment and shows a healthy enjoyment of female sexuality.

"defrauded the government"

"as long as the individuals who were given government prepaid credit cards to survive on are forced to reimburse the government if they defrauded the government as well."

We've heard a lot about this over and over again, but we've been presented very little evidence aside from a couple of anecdotes.

And frankly, the idea of giving people who have lost everything cash, and then being surprised when they spend it in ways you find unsuitable, is ridiculous. Man, if I'd lost my home and/or members of my family, you'd better believe I'd want a drink or several.

No one doubts that some of the money given was spent badly (though is it really "fraud" if you get relief money after a disaster and buy a pack of cigarettes?) but this is a tiny, tiny drop in the bucket compared to the billions that have looted by companies working on disasters. Billions of dollars that were given to Halliburton and KBR to fix up NOLA and there's almost no evidence that they actually accomplished anything at all.

Don't forget to write a letter to the Times!

The least you can do is speak up.

Here's the URL: http://select.nytimes.com/membercenter/ts_davidbrookform.html

The article is titled "The Center Holds".

No need to be clever, it's enough to say that you and the majority of Americans disagree with the war and therefore with David Brooks and Hillary Clinton or even just "I disagree with this article completely because I'm against the Iraq war." Ten thousand short emails are more impressive than 100 long ones.

Here's what I wrote: the initial quote is from the article.

"On “This Week With George Stephanopoulos,” Clinton could have vowed to vacate Iraq. Instead, she delivered hawkish mini-speeches that few Republicans would object to."

Poll after poll have shown that the majority of Americans want to get out of Iraq as soon as possible. I failed to understand why support for this failed war proves Mrs. Clinton as anything other than completely out-of-touch with most Americans on the single biggest issue facing the country today.

Small, free arts paper that pays an almost living wage?

Stay!

Negotiate for more money. Politely worry about the coke.

Trust me, you'll be miserable in a straight job. Take a nuanced viewpoint. Perhaps you can get your boss cleaned up and springboard to a higher position.

I'd call that "completely unfair".

For one, we hear about 9/11 every day but we rarely hear about NOLA. Hear, hear for John Edwards for bringing this back to our consciousness!

For another, Giuliani is partially responsible for the deaths of hundreds of New York firemen. If he'd actually given them working radios, rather than diverting the money to secure Gracie Mansion and Tamany Hall, then they might all be alive today, rather than having run up a hundred flights of stairs just to die...

Have you thought of setting up a monthly contribution system?

I'd gladly sign up to send you $10 a month, Glenn, if I didn't have to work to do it!

You probably should change your PayPal account.

I went through the whole procedure -- but I didn't see the name Glenn Greenwald anywhere in the PayPal pages, just "Unclaimed Territory" -- or really any contact data at all -- so I bailed out before actually sending the $$$.

Further reflection leads me to believe that you haven't fully set up the PayPal account and put your name on it.

Do fix it, or at least reassure me that the money's going to the right place, and I'll complete the transaction.
