I was looking through my ipod and came across the cd 'Up' from Peter Gabriel.
There is a song on it called 'The Barry Williams Show'.
Peter was playing the 'concert in the park' for the NBC Today show. He played one of the other songs from the album and for an encore played 'The Barry Williams Show'.
Why is this important? Well, it's not, exactly. But read the lyrics. He was making a statement.
Poor Katie Couric was shocked (SHOCKED!) afterwards and said something like 'In love with your daughters rapist? Whatever.'
Lets goOne man at the window
One girl at the bar
Saw that look of recognition
When they know just who you are
I seen you on the tv
I seen you on that show
You make the people crazy
And then you let them go
Before the show we calm them
We sympathize, we care
And the hostile folk we keep apart
till the red light says on air
Did you see our leather lovers
All tied up to the chair
Did you catch those child molesters
No one else goes there
What a show, the barry williams show
What a show,
Dysfunctional excess
Is all it took for my success
The greater pain that they endure
The more you know the show will scored
Its showtime
Got the reputation of a surgeon
cos they cannot feel the cut
It looks so very simple
But it really is an art
They call our studio the hospital
Making money from the sick
We let people be themselves
There is no other trick
my lover stole my girlfriend
i keep beating up my ex
i want to kill my neighbor
my daughters selling sex
my s/m lover hurt me
my girl became a man
i love my daughters rapist
my life's gone down the pan
What a show, the barry williams show
The barry williams show
Dysfunctional excess
Is all it took for my success
And when the punches start to fly
The ratings always read so high
Its showtime
that girl has got no scruples
Not a wrinkle on her face
You would not believe the plot she conceived
So they let her take my place
Well, no man is an island
No man is a sea
But this display of emotion
Is all but drowning me
What a show, oh what a show
On my show, the barry williams show
Its my show
What a show
Dysfunctional excess
Is all it took for my success
The best tv you've ever seen
Where people say the things that they really mean
I hear my name, I hear them roar
For the one more time I take the floor
Just one more barry williams show
Were gonna take you where you want to go
Its showtime
Come on down
Come on down
To hell
I loved it... Best moment on that show in a long time... Well since Ann Curry got smacked down by Bobbie Brown the makeup chick.
The problem, at lest for me, was that Dilbert started melding into my real life while working at a 'big-ten' university.
I had so many things happen that would be perfect Dilbert material.
One: I was a 'new hire' that didn't rate an office with a view but the last office available in my division had a window so to quell the near riot and negate the possibility of moving someone from another division into that office, a cubicle wall was constructed to cover the window. YES you read that right.
Time after time, incident after incident, that suck ass job proved that humans being will be more than capable to sink to new and inane levels of petty bickering. Well, and couple that with a boss nearly a total copy of the pointy haired boss, and his boss wasn't much better, and someone could understand that the Dilbert strips that I read were counterproductive. They hit way to close to home.
Also the new Dilbert site sounds like it proves its own point: management always thinks you can do twice as much with half the expenditures and it sounds like they've skimped on servers and maybe some software to handle the task of running the site.
You really have to hand it to the Bushies.
They learned all too well the lessons of the Nazi from Germany.
They control the media, the message and even entertainment. They control many blogs and even read our email and listen in to our telephone conversations and monitor our credit cards and bank accounts.
I would not be surprised to find out that huge chunks of that fantastic and Wall Street invigorating Bush deficit has been poured down the squawking gullet of the media. And money the media has well earned. For prostitutes, they make the women that serviced Spitzer look like runners up for nuns.
It's actually just stunning to see a perfectly pulled of mind job... A high quality act... It can, and did, happen here.
She 'won big'. She has her 'Bush mandate'.
What this says is: "You WILL love me. If you know what's good for oyu..."
