so unfair!
[Read the article: Mitt Romney, father of gay marriage?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Romney's logic seems to be that gays shouldn't marry because marriage is for the purpose of a man and a woman raising children. The only conclusion is that he also doesn't think people who are incapable of reproducing because of age or medical condition - or who just don't want to have children - shouldn't be married either. Why doesn't the press point out the absurdity of his position?

the soldiers who died for telling the truth
[Read the article: The unsettling deaths of Omar Mora and Yance Gray]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Let us be blunt. This is so pathetically, terrifyingly obvious. These courageous soldiers were rubbed out. Just the same as retribution was taken against Valerie Plame for her husband's truth-telling, just a bit more lethal. But what could be more lethal than the Iraq war? When you think about how much is at stake for GWBush and his buddies, a few more lives mean nothing.
This is so 1984 and revolting. Salon, I love you. Don't pull any punches here. These fellows gave their lives to tell the truth. FIND SOME EVIDENCE and let's get those murderous greedy bastards!

keeping the eye on the ball
[Read the article: Obama to Clinton: You'll be working for me]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Personally I think ANY of the Democratic candidates will be a vast improvement and the Republican field is terrifying to me. But all of the issues you list can only be tackled when we have won the general election. Right now the critical question is, which candidate to back in the primary. And there is precious little to go on. Personally, I like Edwards the best. He is the only one who has said we should increase funding to discover what CAUSES cancer, not just cures it, an issue important to me. It goes along with his challenging the corporate hegemony in our country today. But it seems unlikely he will win and so realistically, that leaves my choice between Hillary and Obama. Hillary I fear will be business as usual and Obama I fear is a wild card. Not his fault but he just has been in the public eye for a very short time. And so his demeanor in the one un-scripted moment of the debate today - or maybe the entire campaign - could have significance - or perhaps not. I just don't know!

Head in the sand!
[Read the article: How to solve America's water problems]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]From what I've read, the Great Lakes are shrinking at an alarming rate and the indiginous aquatic life is being destroyed by pollution, warming and invasive species. Why oh why, Mr. McClelland, would you encourage population growth? You should be conserving what you have for the current residents because unless you don't understand the future consequences of climate change (and think the earth is flat), you should know you will be lucky to supply the people who already live in your region.

Phoniness
[Read the article: Edwards on Clinton: Not tough enough?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I was pretty neutral until I watched the video. It looked completely staged to me. She wasn't overcome with emotion that she was struggling to control. She was manufacturing it for the camera. She didn't even answer the question because the whole thing was planned. The question was, who does your hair in the morning? Hillary just mouthed her campaign platitudes and pretended to get teary. I simply cannot believe a woman who could stand up to all the attacks without flinching until now suddenly is overcome with emotion when she's behind in the polls. Edwards could have said a lot worse about that; instead, he stated a simple fact and I give him credit for the restraint. Let's elect somebody genuine, who doesn't need to fake feelings.

Please explain
[Read the article: A new democratic spirit]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Joan, I just saw you on Hardball. Now after Chris Matthews slimed Hillary by saying the only reason she is in politics is because Bill cheated on her (as if she wouldn't have been better off had he never been impeached???) it's hard to imagine how you could sit on his show without challenging that.
But the real reason I'm writing is to beg you please, please tell salon readers why you are going along with the notion that the Democratic party nomination is a two person race. Why why why??
Did you ever hear of John Edwards???
ps. anonymously published letters just mean it's a pain in the neck to remember one's moniker. Anyone can make up any name so why should it matter if it's anonymous?

typical!
[Read the article: Eliot Spitzer's monumental fall from grace]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]After the initial shock, I thought that it makes sense. Paying a prostitute could seem a lot safer than taking a mistress who might make trouble for emotional reasons. It's just too bad he was caught, and too bad Americans are such prudes that he will have to resign. If every politician who cheated on his wife had been forced to resign over it, we would have lost some of the world's greatest leaders. Either there is something about power that leads politicians to hubris, or cheating is really, really common in the general population but gets less noticed.

Refuse to resign!
[Read the article: Spitzer to resign Monday night?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The more I think about it, the more I think he should stay on. He was right, it IS a private matter. And I will be very interested to find out the origins of the FBI wiretapping. If Vitter can stay on, so can Spitzer. It would be great to see him stand on his record of public service and simply refuse to be railroaded by this story.
He's hardly the first husband to stray and won't be the last. If I was his wife I would leave him. But that's got nothing to do with his performance in his job. Ooo he broke the law? So, Corzine broke the law not wearing a seatbelt. That had public consequences because it increases everyone's health costs, ultimately. Anyone could think of a million examples of politicians breaking laws.
