  • Option 2!! (and why Option 3 won't work)

You can do it. Even if you can't sell or rent your house right away, you can do it. Do you have a few hundred dollars? There's your gas money for the journey and a deposit on an apartment. Now, go get another secretary job. You may also have to wait tables at night. Luckily, this is where you will meet all of your like-minded friends. They will all be trying to finish a degree or decide what they want to do with their lives. They will be very fun. They may drink too much, so you'll want to watch out for that.

Option 3 won't work because no matter what people only become more of who they are as time passes. Even if you try really, really hard. People don't change.

Oh yeah - you will cry sometimes and wonder why you did this. But then in about a day or so you'll remember. And you will be so thankful you might feel like your heart could explode.

    Good luck! GO!

  • Dear Anonymous,

Questioning the whole of child-bearing humanity and opening with a quote from Jim Morrison? Nice. Wouldn't want to over-simplify.

Excuse me, but I'm going to go enjoy a few minutes of pure happiness by looking in on my sleeping children and being thankful to the ends of the universe that they are here. Then I guess it's back to terrible pain, loss and illness for me.

You can go on back to the Doors. Have a great life.

  • America's competitive spirit? Or yours?

For all but the most serious runners (like you, I guess), running is a "personal best" sport. Focus on your game and on those with whom you feel competitive. Don't worry about the rest of us. We're not going to trip you as you zoom by. We'll be too busy staggering.

    Enjoy the race!

  • I once got drunk and went into a hotel room with a bunch of Russian soccer players

[Read the article: Our friend got drunk and went to a hotel room with a bunch of Marines]

I had what I described to friends as consensual sex with one of them (though I've rethought the "consensual" part, considering that after the moment of penetration, I knew I was doing something that I didn't want to do and I started crying and pushing and half-hearted hitting - I mean, did I really have the right to fight with all my might considering I had gone into the hotel room fully intending to smooch him? And I was really, really drunk. And thank goodness it was a suite and the others weren't watching.). In the end, when he indicated that I was to have sex with the others, I left as quickly as I could, feeling that I had been lucky to get out of there. I found my friends and fired up a joint right away. Then I made lots of really crude jokes about how I had scored some Russian ass. I can still find a little bit of anger in my heart for those girls; they left me in the room with those guys. If I had had a cell phone, I would have been calling or texting others trying to find out where my friends had gone. I had a boyfriend, too.

Cary is most likely right. Jan feels deeply ashamed for her contribution to whatever happened. She will for a long time. Tell her you wish that nothing had happened in the hotel room. Tell her you love her. Don't laugh when she makes jokes.
