  • A Near Miss

[Read the article: Supreme Court gun ruling could backfire]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

While Obama now says he defends an individual right to bear arms, this is just one more flip-flop -- his comments previously about the constitutionality of the DC law show what he really thinks. What if this issue had come up in a future Court in which new Obama appointees went with yesterday's liberal minority? Poof! No more second amendment.

And -- if there's no more second amendment, how long before we start curtailing the first amendment? Or others? The Supreme Court did the right thing, but people need to appreciate how close a call this was. And how important the Bill of Rights is -- all of it -- regardless of how different amendments cut politically. In truth the second amendment is like the first -- it is aimed at our government's powers against us.

  • Obama Also Has His Karl Rove

[Read the article: McCain reboots, gives rise to the Rovians]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

You gotta admire Karl Rove -- the state-of-the-art political operative, combining great intelligence, discipline and knowledge with complete ruthlessness -- since he is the model all will now follow. Why? It works.

My point: if McCain's campaign now is run by Roveans, so is Obama's. David Axelrod is Son of Rove (not my original thought). Look at the way the Obama campaign skewered Hillary! You think that was all because of the hope and change rhetoric? Nope -- it was a job worthy of the best -- and toughest -- campaign staff out there right now. Someone at McCain HQ has now realized they need to do better to match it.

  • Surprise! Another Obama "Refinement of Position"

[Read the article: Obama will "continue to refine" Iraq policy]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Come on, Obamafolks! Who is this guy? Is he tacking to the right because he's a closet Clintonite centrist who just had to talk liberal to get nominated, or is he a card-carrying liberal who will -- wink, wink, nod, nod -- tack left again once elected as a centrist?

You tell me. I don't have any idea what Obama stands for in any area -- Iraq, NAFTA, FISA, campaign finance, you name it. I suggest to you that that's a problem.

  • Obama's Next "Refinement" -- Offshore Oil Drilling

[Read the article: Obama will "continue to refine" Iraq policy]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Hey, Obamaguys and gals! Do you think your candidate has finished "refining" -- you know, just getting stuff like FISA, NAFTA, campaign finance etc. out of the way now so he can be a principled consistent candidate later on? No way! This is an ongoing process, and the next big item to fall will be his "principled" opposition to offshore oil drilling.

So far the Dems in Congress have managed to stifle the public's overwhelming desire to expand oil exploration and drilling in the US, as McCain has partially endorsed. But that won't last -- there will be too much heat from the citizenry at home. And so, your presidential candidate, no doubt with a heavy heart and finding some way to blame the Republicans, will refine his position on this issue. And there will be other issues, too.

Think I'm wrong? Bet you a nickel!

  • Obama Has It Both Ways Again

[Read the article: One nation, not just speaking English]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Obama's comments regarding second language abilities were cleverly and intentionally confused with "bilinguilism", which has a specific meaning in today's US -- equal status for English and Spanish. He said we should become bilingual, and he meant English and Spanish, not English vs. French, German, Chinese, Hindi or anything else.

I totally agree with other writers here who point out that there's a big difference between English/Spanish bilingualism and learning foreign languages. We should not encourage bilingualism -- English is one of the few things that pulls us together, and we sure as hell should not try to emulate the experiences of Canada, Belgium, and other bilingual societies with bilingual tensions. Obama's comments are simply one more example of his pandering to a particular voting bloc in his clever, deceptive and ruthless -- and probably successful -- march to power.

  • Wow! An Adoring Throng at the Brandenburg Gate!

[Read the article: German chancellor, Berlin mayor bicker over Obama visit ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Apparently Obama's ego knows no limits -- he wants to emulate JFK and Reagan at the Brandenburg Gate BEFORE he is elected president! I am beginning to wonder if this guy isn't some sort of megalomaniac -- say anything, do anything, just get there WHATEVER IT TAKES!! He is starting to scare me.

  • Obama to You: "Get Over It! I Can Say or Do Whatever I Want to Get Elected, Since You Have Nowhere Else to Go."

[Read the article: Today's coverup of surveillance crimes and Barack Obama]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Obama's arrogance is reaching megalomaniac proportions. He obviously feels he can change position at will on a host of issues, without serious consequences because, he seems to think, Democrats who didn't support him initially will willingly support him now because they have nowhere else to go. Combined with the grand spectacle planned at Mile High Stadium and the hoped-for extravaganza at the Brandenburg Gate, he is showing all the marks of a seriously out-of-control ego. Frankly, we have seen enough of those lately, in our country and others.

I don't know how I will vote in November -- I would have liked to vote for Hillary. It is not even close to a certainty that I will vote for Obama. I may change my mind, but if the election were held today, I would not. I simply don't trust him.

  • Anywhere Else to Go?

[Read the article: Betrayed by Obama]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Joan, your comments about Obama's egotism and grandiosity vs. McCain's continued neocon craziness on Iran, etc., sum it up for me as well. Most presidential elections are a choice between bad and less bad, but this one seems to underline that point more than most. Which is why this contest still strikes me as a toss-up. But the result may hinge more on McCain than Obama: if he finds his voice and appears more credible -- which may or may not happen; he's done it before -- he will win over Obama's "unknownness." If not, the voters will throw up their hands and take the big chance, thinking, "If this is the best the system can come up with, why not?"

  • Gramm Is Not McCain's Only Problem

[Read the article: McCain surrogate says Americans are "whiners"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The fact that a hardass like Phil Gramm has anything to do with McCain's campaign is a reflection on McCain, not Gramm -- Gramm is a known quantity. I always thought McCain was smarter than this, but apparently I was wrong. More and more he's coming across as a clueless candidate who doesn't know what he thinks or wants to say. Right now his campaign is a fuzzy blur. At this rate he will lose decisively.
