Rising prices + stagnant wages = lower standard of living

This is the fact that few recognize at this point, and I doubt our "leadership" will point it out. In real terms the adjustments that people are making to deal with rising prices - taking the bus, buying a smaller car, a smaller house, less stuff - reflects a lower standard of living.

What I dislike about Chris Matthews' framing of the candidates is we are all on teh same ship and it does not have to sink. I think more than anything it articulates his opinion of McCain.

I do think there are some paralells with our times and the Titanic though. When the ship sailed the price of a first class ticket did not cover the costs of providing those services; the steerage passengers subsidised the first class passengers.
