Its important to remember that the investment baanks and hedge funds relied on leverage and debt to make their investments and multiply their profits. Its this borrowed money that is vexing them; the underlying investments no longer cover the debt and cannot be repayed. As they try to cover their debt they sell quality assets. Part of the problem everyone is doing the same thing at the same time. Until all that borrowed money that blew up the bubble is written off or payed off we will not hit a bottom. The people with cash are waiting at the sidelines until this happens.
The executive branch now decides what companies live and what companies die. They control the judiciary, capital, and by extension industrial componenents of the country.
Welcome to Socialism for the bourgiose.
I don't think we will be spared a depression, it will just be delayed. And we are just slowly sliding into it.
His appearances on TV did not reassure me in the least. I think the dems. have been had, afraid that they would be blamed for a complete melt down. I've been reading Robert Reich's Blog and he's had some great ideas about this, although I doubt anyone is listening to him.
The comments in the New York Times that were attached to the bail out article are the most angry I've ever seen in that paper. No one likes this deal.

If this piece of crap legislation goes through this is not the end of a guilded age; its the end of the beginning of a new guilded age with all risk socialized and rewards privatized. Those of us not a part of elite class will be in perpetual service to the elite. The natinal debt will be paid by the poor. The elite will pay nothing.
I read as part of the rescue act the national debt ceiling will be raised to 11 trillion dollars. I have no doubt they will spend every red cent of it. That works out to about $35,000 for each man woman and child in this country. Totally unacceptable.
This plan is a disaster!
Why should we entrust the very people that ignored the looming problem? Paulsen is not qualified to execute this program.
I am a middle-aged middle-income play by the rules guy. I carry no debt. My savings have been depleted already by inflation and devaluing of the dollar. I am not willing to have my tax dollars pilfered (again).
"to defend against Barack Obama's possibly stealing Indiana's 11 electoral votes."
If Barack Obama wins Indiana, he's earned, not stolen it. Why is it always presumed certain states and institution belong to the Republicans?
So are my friends.
I've called my congressmen.
What else can I do?
Give nothing
Apologize for nothing
Never admit guilt
Blame your opponent
We don't have a plan fleshed sounds alot like the war, and they will shirk responsibilty later by saying "who could have known.
I am very proud of my Senator Chris Dodd right now. I hope he keeps it up.
The people that brought this about do not have the ability nor mandate to fix this problem.
Just say NO! to the Hanky Panky Plan.
So far we've survived 5 whole days of what was supposed to have been our imminent demise.
would make a great Treasury Secretary
His right eye looks glassy to me.....
This is the final "jump the shark" moment for the McCain campaign, and may bring down the Bush administration with it. They all seem to be scrammbling now.
But why has it built into a crisis?
Many of us non-presidents have seen this coming for a long time. This is not a dark mark at the end of an otherwise good era. This is an enormous failure emblamatic of his years of rule.
He'll try to bully the congress into passing the Hanky Panky Plan with no restrictions. I hope the congress continues to show intestinal fortitude.
I'm calling Mssrs. Dodd, Lieberman and Shays to express my continued displeasure. No way can this deal go through.
I think it stinks. I've called Chris Dodd multiple times to let him know so - I am one of his contiuents.
This is a no-brainer. Can the Dems not smell blood? Paulson, Bernake and Bush have all appeared nervous to me.
I don't want to bail out Wall St fat cats.
The Democrats have been negotiating in good faith, and now McCain and the house republicans don't like the plan THEIR OWN PARTY has put forward.
Let the Wall St banks fail. Why should I pay to bail out people that were lending/borrowing at leverage rates of 30:1? They always clained they knew what they were doing, and they deserved the reward because of the risk. Stop shoving the losses on me. Since since people I respect, like Krugman, have said intervention is necessary, I've held my nose and go along. I still don't like it tho.
And I am a democrat.
My impression is that Bill is positioning Hillary for 2012. They've hardly made a secret of their intentions.
What I find difficult, for me, on a personal basis, is that Bill Clinton does not share the same sense of urgency about this election. Like it doesn't matter who's President in January because Hillary's '12 campaign is more important.
Just the number of times he's gotten on the TV about this tells me it stinks.
Everything from the administration is an emotional appeal,to fear and anger. I've called Dodd, Lieberman and Shays multiple times. I doubt Dodd will be reelected here in CT if this thing passes. He's been set up as the fall guy.
