Why does no one ever mention "Frontline"?
[Read the article: Iraq: Why the media failed]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]More than any other broadcast news source Frontline has done a great job of reporting skeptically about the war. They reported on the dubious claims of Mr. Chalabi well before the war started.
Their recent 3 part series on the probelms facing the the news media was good as well.

Will people watch quality?
[Read the article: David Halberstam on today's American press]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Rob Marine -
Ironically, if it were, the American people would tune back in, and news could be profitable by delivering actual news.
I would like to belive this would be true. I for one, no longer watch the television news. I can't stand the breathless wall-to-wall coverage the "big" stories get these days.

A View from Connecticut
[Read the article: The Dan Gerstein sham]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I know this is stepping away of the subject of the original post, so I'll keep it brief.
I doubt Jane Hampsire's actions had any impact on the re-election of Lieberman. It appears to be more or a blogosphere issue. It got no coverage in the newspaper or television. Trying to paint one of the parties as racist was important only to discourage some from voting in the election.
Understand that the Democratic Party in Connecticut is bifurcated - there are limosine liberals in the wealthier parts of the state, and working class, conservative "Reagan Democrats" in the places where manufacturing used to take place. The latter are Lieberman's diner buddies, and the people that Lamont needed to win over in the general election.
But in the end I think Ned Lamont made some mistakes in his campaign that had a greater effect.
1. He let Lieberman give his "consolation" speech first. This gave Lieberman 15 mins uninterrupted (starting at 11PM) to launch his new campaign. And Lieberman gave the performance of his life. Lamont came after commercials, and was not as polished.
2. Lamont let himself be surrounded with people from outside CT and that was the "money shot" that every newspaper and broadcast went with. It gave the impression that Lamont was allied with interests outside Connecticut.
3. He went on vacation right after the primaries giving Lieberman momentum.
I was sorry Lamont lost for many issues beyond the war - I voted for him. I think he had a larger impact in teh election than most have given him. Although he lost he changed the nature of the debate. He proved an entrenched, imcubent war supporter could be beat.

WSJ Business News Channel
[Read the article: Rupert Murdoch wants to buy the Wall Street Journal]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]My guess is Rupert Murdoch would like the Journal for its name so he can affix it to his new business news channel. What better way to gain instant credibility against CNBC?
Combining print and operations with some of his other holdings (The Post and other NY local weeklies) would be gravy too.

Nice list....
[Read the article: Ask the Pilot]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]In terms of the crew speaking during the flight I think for me it all depends. Although I no longer fly as mush for a number of years I travelled in excess of 200,000 miles per year. I could recite all the safety information from memory. I usually did not like a very chatty pilot ("Right now we're flying over Topeka, my hometown") but at times they can be quite illuminating. There is nothing like flying at night in the early evening arounf July 4th. Or cirling around some weather and seeing the storm inside.
I HATE it when the SW flight attendants do a floor show.

[Read the article: Who funds and runs the Politico?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I might add that where all discourse is percieved as opinion, whoever talks longest or yells loudest wins.
I figure that's why the people on the right are loud and talk over people.

Oprah will be on TV for as long as she likes.....
[Read the article: Is Oprah the new Imus?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Oprah makes far more money than Imus or Joe Scarborough...probably more than MSNBC. But the constitiency she makes the most more for are the stations that carry her. They make money carrying her show, and for most she is the lead-in for their local news. Everywhere Oprah is the lead-in they are ranked number one in the local news.

He's an Idiot
[Read the article: One picture, one thousand words]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Sam,
I am no fan of Senator Droopy Dog. I am not porud to call him my (junior) Senator. I think he just said enough to get re-elected. For the most part Joe does not get much coverage here in CT. His op-eds appear in the Washington Post, and occasionally the Wall Street Journal.
My own opinion is the republicans have puffed him up and made him feel important. He does not realized he's been co-opted, he thinks he's just cooperating. I think the national exposure is more important to Senator Lieberman than his constiuents in CT. He does not have a snow ball's chance in hell to be a running mate to McCain. Someone may be whispering in his ear that he could have it, in exchange for his continued support of all things Bush. In the end they'll just screw him - he's already shown he can't win in the polls.

A Connecticut Yankee on Lieberman
[Read the article: Joe Lieberman, warmongering centrist]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I did not vote for Lieberman in 2006, and have had serious reservations about him for a number of years. Most of the people I know feel the same way. I do know people that did vote for him in 2006 - many falling for incumbancy.
Joe does not care about CT at all anymore, he is only interested in burnishing his own national reputation. I think he's been seduced by the power, feeling like he's in the middle of everything. He used to make the occasional trip to CT for photo-ops, his famous "diner meetings", and he's not done any of that nonsense since the election.
