omooex, coram, little brother

Ah, I am breathing a sigh of relief. Anti-Klingon rocks will beat bat'leths any day. And I think gagh is too damn chewy, so good thing I don't have to eat it for breakfast.

*nerd alert*

I salute The Prisoner.

Jack, Obama caves to everyone

except the Progressive Caucus.

I guess he is going to follow Peggy Noonan's advice to just "walk on by."

I sometimes suspect it is performance art. But then, nah.

Titonwan

What is this strange word share that you speak of?? We have never heard of such a strange concept in our world. We abide by the ancient tenet fuckyouIgotmine. But you confuse me with a sense of wonder.

O Brave New World, that has such people in't!

"a histrionic intellectual mess"

That sums up Beck nicely. I tried to listen to him once and his thoughts were so completely disjointed that I wondered what in the world his audience was getting out of his rants. His audience would make a great subject for those who study reception theory.

Currently, opposition to "the government" is easily translated into "opposition to Democrats," and these protests are thus exploited and distorted as partisan Republican tools even though many of the individual protesters are as anti-GOP as they are anti-Democrat. Add to that the Democratic Party's general distaste for citizen activism (especially street protests) as well as its servitude to Wall Street and corporate interests, and Democrats are straitjacketed into ceding this protest movement to GOP operatives, who are cynically exploiting it to promote goals that have nothing to do with -- are even at odds with -- the goals of many of the protesters themselves.

I have been trying to figure out this bizarre spectacle of not-your-usual-suspects taking to the streets, and I think this is a good explanation. One of the most maddening things about the Democrats is their distaste for activists, despite the fact that the most passionate and politically motivated people in this country fall under their rubric (although often only out of bitter necessity); moreover, the Dems count on these people to vote--and get out the vote--when elections come around. The deliberate erosion of activism has certainly been a by-product of the Dems embrace of corporations.

Amity

But that's just the most extreme example. The same thinking pervades the entire movement against public education, and while it may be unspoken it's not at all unconscious. White people would rather kill one of the most democratic, egalitarian, and productive institutions ever conceived in this country, rather than share it equally with ethnic minorities.

I think that the goals of those who have decimated our system of public education may be a bit broader and more simple than this. A poorly educated populace is one that is more easily led, more manipulable.

Amity, on cats and the distribution of wealth (noms)

Have you seen Broccoli Kitteh? :)

Have you heard this one?--

Dog: "My human feeds me and cares for me and gives me shelter. He must be God."

Cat: "My human feeds me and cares for me and gives me shelter. I must be God."

Unbelievable

This is some intellectually lazy writing. You cut down Moore based on inane right-wing talking points and then insult your readers by implying that anyone who likes Moore is a crazed, mindless worshiper. Well, I like Moore and think his films are valuable.

I guess that makes me just too contemptible for you.

Doughy Pantload is one of my favorites

but I think this one needs a related entry:

“Michael Moore is fat…”- Attempting to discredit one’s opponent by accusing them of ‘hypocrisy’, usually meaning character flaws not related to the argument in question. Thus, Michael Moore’s protests against the Second Iraq War should be discounted by reason of his obesity, Al Gore’s efforts to bring attention to global warming are moot because he “lost” the 2000 presidential campaign, and Al Franken isn’t a “real” senator because he used to be a professional comedian. A form of the ad hominem logical fallacy in that it attacks the writer’s motives without addressing his or her argument.

Because this stupid money-making meme has really gone into hyper-drive with Michael Moore's new film:

The Wolf Blitzer Capitalism Fallacy

To Michael Moore:

Let’s talk about...most people who are going to see this movie who don’t like you are going to say, "you know what, Michael Moore has done pretty well in this free-market, capitalist system—you’ve become a fairly rich guy yourself."

Moore answers:

Why am I against capitalism if I’ve done so well? Shouldn’t the question be better put—-I’m not trying to do your job for you—-but wouldn’t the question better be, "gee Mike, you’ve done so well, why don’t you just kick back at the lake and enjoy your life. Why do you care about people losing their health care and their jobs and all that...you’re not losing yours." I wonder if there was a Wolf Blitzer 200 years ago who asked Thomas Jefferson or John Adams or George Washington, "hey, you know, you guys are wealthy land owners..."

This question is the only thing the MSM hacks can come up with for Moore.
