Original article: In memory of Gordon Ramsay

Lurve Gordon

Yes he yells, yes Kitchen Confidential is complete and total crap. But the man is stunning to watch in the kitchen and his bollocksing makes sense once you see the possible results.

Two bit flipping fits come to mind: BBC eppy about Gordon and opening a new place. He practically guts a kitchen guy for trying to revive old yet undercooked lentils and pass them off as new. Ramsay should have killed the kid, frankly, but didn't. And you can be damn sure no one tried to pull anything like that again.

The other was Kitchen Nightmares when Gordon went to save some place when the owner was trying to run the kitchen and failing. Gordon essentially set two sous chefs against one another. One was talented, the other a bit of a plodder. In the end, after Ramsay had left and come back for the two week follow up, we learn the creative one had quit with no warning to return to his home country. The plodder was in charge and doing a damn fine job. Creative is lovely but no one will hold your hand and whisper pretty things in your ear when you're 'in the weeds' as Tony likes to say.

And since I actually love Tony way way more than Ramsay - did you all see that eppy where Eric Ripert and Ton worked the grill as Les Halles? Loved it!

and read Marco's book mainly because that one old photo of him looking insanely hot with long hair and a ciggie decades ago. Lame book. Such a let down. One more reason to hate him and love Gordon.

cruising...

If you're going to be your authentic self with your wife, do her the courtesy of telling her you cruise websites and engage in conversations with people you're attracted to. Don't just be honest for your sake - be honest for hers.

Original article: Erica Kane is my guru

no closet for me.

Huge AMC fan. Ginormous. My story is the same as lots of other fans. My older sisters got me hooked at the tender age of 3. I caught up on school vacations and 3 day weekends, then built my college schedule around it, tried to keep from head from exploding when I moved to California where AMC airs at noon instead of 1pm. My first thought: but I'm not hungry at noon and I eat lunch with Erica so - how will this ever work? I altered my metabolism for my show. Soap fans have done more for lesser programs.

And yes I have a real job, support my husband and daughter in bougie comfort. And still, my mother says stuff like - "I met this woman, so intelligent, high school science teacher - and she watches All My Children." Soap! It's not just for idiots!

PS - Here's one for you cool fans list: Stephen King has copped to some big AMC love - and gets shout-outs from AMC in return.

my daughter..

peed on me when she discovered computer games. She was sitting on my lap, mesmerized by Dora, and couldn't bother to go to the potty. She was almost 4. Computer games are the devil.

working mom/stay at home dad

As a working mom with a house husband who's a stay at home dad, I can honestly say I have the far far easier gig. I work out of the house so I see exactly what my husband goes through all day-- the millions of details he looks after, the constant care he gives our daughter. If he were pissed and bitter (which he's not, thank God) I couldn't blame him. I doubt I could do what he does with as much good spirit.

Original article: "Brüno"

re: the Mickey Rooney role

There's a scene in The Bruce Lee Story where Bruce reacts to seeing that Mickey Rooney caricature. It's heartbreaking. I see the same look on my Chinese American husband's face when he sees a bucktoothed, squint-eyed 'Chinaman' in any movie or TV show (whether played by a Caucasian 'in drag' or Asian cast specificlly for that look.) It's shame. It's the red-cheeked, burning feeling that 'that's how they see us.' There are a million ways white folks can be made fun of - as bible thumpers/rednecks/greasers/trophy wives/nerdy accountants with pants pulled up too high. But white folks are rarely mocked simply for having lighter skin and double-lidded eyes.

So yeah. It's offensive and makes me want to smack the crap out of the producers.
