"The North Wind made the Vikings?" That's what my Minnesota born mama always used to tell us kids when we complained the going was tough.

    Magical as always, Mr. Keillor.

  • Death is the end

[Read the article: What's the best method for a painless suicide?]

There is no existence after this life. The "research" that supports OBEs and afterlife experiences is completely bogus. Without the physical brain, there are no mental processes. No mental processes=no YOU. I have done a lot of research on this subject as well. People who try to convince you otherwise are full of crap. "Near-death" experiences are an artifact of a dying/traumatized brain and that is all. No one wants to believe that existence ends when we do, which is why religion is so popular. But all the evidence is that they are wrong.

So this life is it. This is your one shot at living. It sucks a lot. I have also struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts on and off all my life (46 years), so I understand. But there must be SOMETHING that lights up your life. If money is not an object, then you are free to be an artist or a musician or to devote your life to charity to help others. Quit spending your time thinking about yourself so much and focus on externals. That will help you get over your social phobias. Because really, either you are a snob, or you are shy because you worry what people think of you. Frankly, they don't think about you all that much and if they do, who cares? You are just as good as they are and probably better than most. Get some exercise if you have not been. Get out and enjoy nature. Travel and see beautiful things. Volunteer to be a big sister to help a child less fortunate. Spend some time thinking creatively about how you could make this planet a better place than you found it. And then do something.

Get a life. You only have one. Enjoy it as much as you can while you are here.

  • Theocracy

[Read the article: "Ugly choices" in Iraq -- but after the election is over]

'If you need proof that the Lord works in mysterious ways, you can't do much better than this: At a ceremony in Miami Thursday, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said that Donald Rumsfeld "leads in a way that the good Lord tells him is best for our country."'

So, it's not only Bush who is receiving instructions from God? Rumsfeld too? Bodes ill for a non-theocratic future.

Of course, the Lord isn't doing so well either.
