Original article: John Yoo's war crimes

Working within the system to bring about justice.

Floyd:

http://www.chris-floyd.com/content/view/1272/135/

The time has passed for ordinary political opposition, "within the system." The system itself has been perverted and converted into something else; it is now impossible to "work within the system" in the old understanding of that term, because that old system is gone. To work within the current system is to collaborate with evil, to give it legitimacy.

Silber:

http://powerofnarrative.blogspot.com/2008/03/morality-justice-and-life-destroyed.html

More and more evidence of the monstrousness of what the U.S. has done and what it continues to do today has slowly made its way into the light, although only at the very edges of our national debate, far from the "mainstream." The information is available, as it has been from the beginning and before the beginning. But you have to search for it.

Most Americans are not interested in any of that, or in the truth of the U.S.'s sickeningly bloody immorality. We remain "the last, best hope of Earth," inherently superior to all other nations and all other peoples in history. The U.S. imposes justice on everyone else. We are the United States -- we are the perfect embodiment of justice. It is redundant and meaningless to suggest that justice be applied to our own actions.

...

No new president will alter any of this. And yet we pretend that this election may result in significant changes. We lie to ourselves all the time, for we cannot survive in any other way. Meanwhile, the United States government prepares to do it all again, perhaps on an even wider scale. Most Americans, almost everyone in the media, and almost all bloggers do absolutely nothing.

He don't need no stinking facts!

Just admit that you weren't aware of these facts.

-- GlennGreenwald

I think he should just admit that he is a dim-witted, authoritarian whore. That would be more explanatory and truthful.

Che

I would say, "don't sweat them, they are just clueless" but the sad thing is we do have to sweat them. It is one of the most heartbreaking aspects of our current predicament. They so want to believe that what they are "doing" is making a real difference that they will latch onto anything that makes it seem so. All the while willfully ignoring the fact that, in the grand scheme of things, nothing has changed and nothing is changing. They are delusional. They actually believe they are changing the landscape and will go to great lengths to dismiss the truth staring them in the face. For the more intelligent members of their coalition, the cognitive dissonance has to be astoundingly intense.

Our future will be determined in large part by deluded "letter writers." That knowledge makes my stomach turn.

Jeebus

I would say that the break you are seeing is as much an illusion as the continuum which preceded it. The entire history of the U.S. from 1947 to the present has been pointing toward GWB, or someone like him, but the outcome has never been inevitable, and isn't now.

And herein lies the lie. It pointed to GWB and we have arrived. What planet are you on? The "outcome" is the current state of affairs. That is a fact and all your "given enough time we can still pull this out by conventional means/ the fat lady hasn't sung yet" is nothing more than delusional fantasy.

The time has passed for ordinary political opposition, "within the system." The system itself has been perverted and converted into something else; it is now impossible to "work within the system" in the old understanding of that term, because that old system is gone. To work within the current system is to collaborate with evil, to give it legitimacy. --Chris Floyd

Who is the "decider" of legitimacy?

The SCOTUS won't rule in your favor so the government is not "illegitimate" no matter how much we might think it is.

-- L.W.M

You are correct! They won't rule in favor of the constitution and "the people." Also correct that the government is not illegitimate. It is the government of the United States of America after all. It is as legitimate as they say it is. It is as legitimate as you say it is LWM. It is a failed government by any original intent standard but it will always be "legitimate" as long as jokers like you give it legitimacy.

The astounding part of this, at least to me, is watching apparently intelligent, knowledgeable people like you, continue to try and convince people like Che that they need to work within a system and a set of laws that are no longer responsive and do not respect the people in the least.

It would be hilarious if it wasn't physically sickening to observe.

JulieAnna

What a lovely bunch of people the GoodCelery! fan club has turned out to be.

-- JulieAnna

FWIW, I have been reading (and sporadically commenting on) this blog since literally a month after its original inception as UT and I can tell you that there have developed a few cliques here. It isn't just GC you have to watch your "mouth" around. You may already know this but there are certain "regulars" here who see it as their place. If you go off the reservation, even to simply point out the obvious, and it is something they don't particularly want to hear, you will be attacked.

All of this is to say that, while I don't mind GC's writing (I tend to skip over most of it to be honest), I just wanted you to know that there is at least one person watching who agrees with your initial assessment of the situation.
