Not to pick nits, but...

I hate to be a nitpicker regarding a letter about nitpicking.

The Yellow ribbon thing may have been kicked off by the cheesy Tony Orlando song, but the symbolism derives from a John Wayne movie; "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon," the symbolism of which derives from the yellow stripe on a cavalry trooper's pants. So, if you want to get bent out of shape about the various meanings of the color yellow, I suggest discussing it with a veteran of the AirCav.

Chupacabra is a relative newcomer

A New Guinea Chimp would be a cryptid, alright.

I also take issue with lumping the Chupacabra in with "classic" examples of legendary cryptids. As a non-believer who is just fascinated by the field of cryptozoology, I know that this supposed critter hasn't been around for more than a couple of decades.

Bryan is right, "Monsterquest" is awesomely entertaining.

Undercover?

Why do this person's opinions require anonymity? I have not read one opinion in this column that I would not expect on Fox News. I think it's Bernie Goldberg, because the Wingnut hasn't had a single comment that didn't mention the bias of the "Left Wing Media."

The Arrogance of Pseudoscience

I take issue with the bashing of science as a discipline that is not open to new ideas. I've been a working scientist for nearly thirty years. In that time I've seen ideas that were considered cornerstones of geology, genetics, physics, anthropology and evolutionary biology upended and swept into the textbook dustbin.

Every scientist I've known has been more than willing to accept new theories when those theories are accompanied with evidence. Also, the idea that scientists are unwilling to upset the status quo is rediculous. The scientist who proves Darwin or Einstein wrong will become the most famous scientist in history. The key word here is prove, as with evidence.

Arrogance is the provence of the pseudosciences. No ammount of contrary evididence ever seems to shake the preconceived conclusions of a pseudoscientist.

Objectivity Alert

Miller never mentions that Macmillen is the great-granddaughter of David Lloyd-George; one of the principal architects of the Treaty of Versailles. I would hate to think that my great grampa was responsible for the Second World War.

@MerelyMortalMale

Holocaust denial? Hey, it goes with the territory. Feminist bashing apropos of nothing? OK, a little off topic, but what the heck. Defending Louis XVI? Now I've heard everything.

Entertaining? Yes, but...

The current fashion among progressives of writing off right-wing media loons as mere "entertainers" is dangerous. Whatever their bombastic intentions are, their readers, viewers and listeners may feel entertained, but also think they are being informed. As distasteful as it may seem, charges made by these folks have to be addressed and refuted, quickly and harshly and without adding liberal spin. Seriously, has there ever been a less "reality based" movement than the current Right. Facts should be enough.
