  • stupidity on ESPN

Ugh! I have come to expect very little from the baseball "analysts" on ESPN, but Harold Reynolds just reached a new low in a segment designed to show how the White Sox won by manufacturing runs. Of course, Reynolds just ignored the two home runs hit by Jermaine Dye and Joe Crede. That pales in comparison to Reylods' analysis of the fifth White Sox run. Those of you who saw the game might have thought that Podsednik's triple was the key play that allowed A.J. Piersynski (I don't know how to spell his name) to score. Nope. Apparently, it was A.J.'s stolen base that allowed him to score...on a triple. Thank God for Harold; otherwise I might have thought it was a stupid and ill-advised risk that turned out to be irrelevant thanks to a blast to center field so deep that a Giambi could have scored from first base.

  • Always remember the motive

The BCS, while needlessly complex, is doing exactly what it is supposed to do. The NCAA doesn't care who its "champion" is as long as people keep talking about college football, getting excited about college football, and (this is the important one) spending lots of money on college football.

Sports fans like to argue and be outraged. Teams like to think they've been disprespected. The media likes to write about it. The NCAA likes money.

    The BCS is brilliant.

  • more on the Colts' schedule

Who do the Colts play the rest of the way? Here's why I'm curious: they haven't played anyone so far. They've had a week off before meeting a beat up Patriots team on Monday night. Let's assume they go undefeated this year. Heck, let's even let them win the Super Bowl. If they go undefeated for the whole season, but do it against one of the softest schedules of all time, does that taint the achievement?

I don't actually have an answer, but it seems like you could have the case where the Colts have one of the greatest seasons, record-wise, in NFL history and still don't get credit for being among the top teams of all time.

  • Re: Belechick sore loser/ Colts weaknesses

JLS, please don't start attributing motives to Bill. The Patriots defense has forced five turnovers in seven games and not stopped anyone during that span. If Belichek was cranky, I would GUESS that it's because his team isn't performing, and he's not a warm fuzzy guy under the best of circumstances. Of course that's just a guess. Before we start dissing the guy who has won 3 of the last 4 Superbowls, maybe we should consider some alternate explanations.

And by the way, the Colts whined about snow on the field and claimed they were just as good as the Patriots (after losing last year's regular season game). Plus, Peyton basically imploded on the field during the playoffs, blaming everyone on the offense but himself.

I like Tony Dungy, but this isn't a team that suddenly has a monopoly on class.

  • in an effort to make the column dirtier

If you're those Carolina Panthers cheerleaders do you really want to release a statement denying that you were having sex in the bathroom? These two girls are currently the most famous lesbian cheerleaders in history. They could probably set themselves up with a nice nest egg before "coming out" in a few years and claiming they were really just applying makeup.

  • Pete Carrol is really dumb

[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I don't want to take anything away from UT, Vince Young, or one of the greatest college football games ever, but Carrol cost his team the game by making two (possibly three) spectacular mistakes on the same play.

    1) USC never should have gone for it on 4th and 2. Young didn't complete a pass over 15 yards in the entire game. In other words, even if USC punts the ball 20 yards, the odds are it would have taken Young at least two plays to cover that distance.

    2) Reggie Bush wasn't on the field. No disprespect to the backup, but I've spent the last year hearing how Bush is the second coming of Sayers/Payton/Sanders/Brown/etc. How is the best player in college football standing on the sidelines at the decisive moment?

    3) You could argue that a dive up the middle was also really stupid. Everyone knew it was coming. Why not let Matt Leinart play-fake and throw a short pass? It may not have worked, but if you aren't going to put the game in the hands of your best player, maybe you should at least put the game in the hands of your second-best player.

All of which goes to show: college coaches make their money in recruitment, not in game management.

  • Young's NFL career

Spike, don't get your hopes up about Vince Young's prospects as a pro. He might have been a better college player this year than Reggie Bush (I don't really have an opinion either way), but Bush will probably still have a better NFL career.

Pro football does not have a strong track record of taking athletic quarterbacks with really bad throwing motions and turning them into superstars. Young might make a good wide receiver, but he won't be winning games under center at the next level.

  • coaching matchup

I'm not sure how the Pats-Broncos game will go, but if it comes down to the coaches, then I like Belichick's odds.

Mike Shanahan has a boulder-sixed chip on his shoulder. You know he's sick of hearing about how he can't win without John Elway. It's just killing him. Tomorrow, he's going to look across the field and see the guy universally considered the smartest coach in the NFL. Remember when Shanahan held that title?

At some point in the game Shanahan is going to screw his team by getting to cut in an attempt to outsmart Belichik. Something along the lines of, "let's abandon the running game and let Jake the Snake run a no-huddle all-audible offense. They'll never see it coming." Maybe it won't be that big, but at some point it's going to happen. If the Broncos are really lucky, it won't cost them the game.
