Original article: You have no right to vote

No Right To Vote - the Constitution says otherwise

While it may be true that federal courts are reading the Constitution in a way that excludes such a right, they're wrong. Just as wrong as those who think gay marriage would be some sort of 'special right.' Amendment IX makes it clear that it was the framers intent not to limit the liberty of Americans via the Constitution: "The enumeration in the Constituion, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people." In plain english: "hey, we're smart, but we can't think of everything." The Jeffersonian view is that we live in a state of liberty - unencumbered except as expressly and legally forbidden by laws. Presumably, just ones. No one can reasonably doubt an adult American citizen's right to vote, or, for that matter, to marry whomever they please.

Original article: I'm younger than that now

Man, you're only 53

Gary...c'mon...I'm older than you, have two jobs, one of which is drumming 5 nights a week, I'm married to a beautiful 39 year old woman...well, you get the photo. Yea, I'm probably about half way through my trip here, advances in science being what they are and barring unforseeable tragedy, but so what? Eat right, excercise. Go snorkeling on Kauai. Start living again? My question is when and why did you stop?

One more point to add to JumpyD's excellent missive...

Why is the targeted "bad" air travel recreational travel, when biz travel represents the vast majority of flights and with the advent of video conferencing is not essential most of the time anyway? I'd rather people were flying for nice long vacations abroad and staying home to work!

Did none of you see "The Host"?

Seems to me that this movie is an expensive American knock-off of last year's wonderful low budget Korean flick "The Host" - I can hear the meeting now... "Let's make the charming and sympathetic Korean family who personally fight and finally, sustaining heartbreaking losses defeat the sea monster and make them American yuppies - that way it's more fun to put them through all this schlocky terror. And obviously we do it in New York cause we can tap into the whole 9/11 thing. Just like Godzilla and Tokyo after the bomb!" High fives ensued all around...

Original article: Looking past Pennsylvania

Obama and losing Pennsylvania

Penn is not a winner take all state - the guy came from as far back as a 25 point deficit a few weeks ago to 10. Sure, he spent a lot of money, but this was Clinton country and he was clearly gaining ground right up to the vote. It's not that Obama couldn't 'seal the deal,' it's that Clinton couldn't. Unless Clinton can get a LOT of super delegates to go against the voters to whom they are ultimately answerable, she can't possibly win the nomination. She needs to win all the remaining races (she won't) and get between 60 and 70 percent of the super delegates (she won't) in order to win the nomination. It's not going to happen.

The benefits of more money

Shapiro asks "exactly what benefits did Obama's better than 2-to-1 financial advantage on television buy him in Pennsylvania?" Er...going from 25 points down to 9 and gaining more delegates? That's a nice benefit, no?

Enough with the Clinton cheerleading, at least be honest about it.

Images can lie...

Finding out the truth behind this iconic photo, I'm reminded of a more recent example. For a while a few years ago, there was a ubiquitous picture of an Israeli soldier grabbing a little Palestinian boy by the arm - it was used to show the 'brutality' of the 'occupiers' in every progressive meeting house in Berkeley (and in other places, I'm sure). The real story? The kid was playing in a field. Behind him, Palestinians started throwing rocks at some Israeli soldiers, and the boy was between them. The soldier in question ran toward the rock-throwers and picked up the boy, moving him to safety, fearful that he'd be hit by the rocks.

Faulty comparison?

Farhad, the alternator-provided electicty used by the device is being provided anyway, so the question is whether what the device uses is comparable in 'cost' as the gas it saves. I don't see how it could be even close if the imprvement is even the lower end 20%...unless the device is causing the alternator to work so much harder it burns out quickly, then you'd have to factor in the replacement cost of alternators vs the savings in gas...right?

Original article: Ask the pilot

Hey Tapenade

Nobody forced you to become a professor instead of a pilot. My guess is that you don't work over the summer unless you feel like it. Let's factor in one more thing - if you do your job badly (I'm sure you don't, even though you seem to have quite the chip on your shoulder and some serious attitude), nobody dies. Get over yourself.

Not very graceful for an athelete...

I'm a professional drummer. Since I was a little kid, I've practiced, learned to read music, worked at drumming. I've been getting paid for doing it since I was a young teenager and I've played in front of millions of people (that's an estimate, maybe it's only hundreds of thousands). When people come up to me after a show or on the street and tell me "I'm a drummer, too," it makes me happy - they aren't truly trying to compare our abilities or level of commitment or history or the blood, sweat and tears of blown auditions (there have been some) or saying they have felt the thrill of getting a huge ovation playing in a baseball stadium - they're just finding common ground and feeling a little comraderie with someone who just had a little star dust sprinkled on them for a minute. Lighten up. However snotty you want to be about it, these people did, in fact, do gymnastics or swim or whatever when they were kids. Just not as well or in as committed a way as you did. And no, I'm not the world champion drummer, so I guess you'll say I'm not qualified to talk to you about this either.
