I have had Type One diabetes since I was 2 years old. I don't expect that when stem cell research finally gets going and produces results that that will help me out. But if it can find a cure for diabetes and spare other adults and children from the traumas of the disease, then let's go for it.
As for Patricia Heaton, she'll probably end up in those Christian apocalyptic movies, like born-again Kirk Cameron.
What you fail to realize is that there are many of us who give the Bible very little credibility. And your idea that our history is based on the Bible is a sweeping generalization that leaves one wondering what part of history or whose history you're talking about.
The Bible is a collection of myths and tall tales and perhaps a few real-life stories. I don't really care what the Bible says or doesn't say. I'm under no obligation to follow a book that was written centuries ago by men and has been continually re-translated and re-edited over that span of time.
"There is not a sex video of Kevin and Britney in existence."
The thanks of a grateful nation.
He just won't allow this country to shrink back to the wallowing, self loathing mess that it became after Vietnam.
Please don't presume to speak for me or anyone else who was glad that the war in Vietnam was over.
Second, Salon has NOT always been like this. Yes, it's always been a mix of topical things from science to politics to celebrity to religion and on and on. But it has NOT always had the tabloid elements of the last year or so.
I agree with this completely. If Salon is going to focus on people in the world of entertainment, they used to offer interviews with actors, writers, directors, etc., who had some interesting and intelligent things to say. Now, if they're done at all, they're only available via podcast.
Video Dog is rarely a stop for me at Salon because the posts are too infrequent and the selection are rarely that interesting. So much great video online but here there are TV clips (saw them two days ago), Paris Hilton videos when people really aren't chattering about her anymore (she treats cute dogs poorly, doesn't blush at being a complete bigot on camera, has literally been f****d for the world to see...not much more to talk about is there?) and god help me there always seems to be those damn bunnies here.
I agree with this, too. There are much better video offerings at other sites.
I love you, Salon, and realize that you're a work in progress.
It's great that you're here.
Sorry, Cintra, I completely disagree with you about Ellen DeGeneres. I thought she looked terrific and was funny and charming throughout the show.
I'm so glad that Glenn and all of you are here! Woo-hoo!
First of all, it doesn't matter if some on the right seem to be understanding and OK with who you are or were; they will still enact policies that take away your rights and/or punish you. Phyllis Schlafly, that old dragon of the right, has a gay son, for Christ's sake, and she still does everything she can to make sure that gays don't have any rights at all. Many of those right-wing politicans and pundits have gay sons, daughters, siblings, friends, and it doesn't matter to them; keeping the bigots voting for the Republican Party is more important to them than any simulated love or affection for their gay acquaintances.
Secondly, your conclusion that someone who is antiwar is a zealot is just another example of right-wing projection. How is protesting and trying to stop an unnecessary, unethical war the sign of "zealotry"? That's a sign of normalcy. You had better look at your fellow chickenhawks (no pun intended), who have declared, both overtly and covertly, that the Middle East should be bombed to smithereens and the U.S. should plunder all the oil that's there. That's not only zealotry, it's lunacy.
FYI, I linked your excellent letter ("The Media Lost Me In The Winter of 64/65") in the Beat the Press thread in Salon's Table Talk White House folder.
Regards,
RKent
How morally schizophrenic are we when the baby's chance to live depends merely on the whims of its mother and whether or not it is "wanted"?
How stupid are you to not realize that the decision to abort is not "whimsical" and is a decision that takes a great deal of agonizing deliberation and thought on the part of the woman who is carrying the fetus?
Aren't there enough interesting, respectable, credible Republican leaders to make the rounds?
No, there aren't. None, nada, nobody.
All I can say is, what the hell is wrong with these people?
I echo your "Ha ha." Mega "ha ha" to you, Chris.
And this man, Halperin, works for Time?
Astounding, just astounding.
The push for gay marriage didn't start with Massachusetts. It started much sooner than that, in May of 1991 when three gay couples in the state of Hawaii sued to make their relationships legal. When they were unable to do so, it ignited a furor among gay communities nationwide.
I'm a gay man, and even I don't worship men and fall down before them the way these Republican clowns do.
Sheesh.
I have no respect for the Beltway pundits, absolutely none, and yet they think that they're the greatest.
I respect Glenn Greenwald, Joe Conason, Gene Lyons, Greg Palast, and others, but none of them are on the mainstream news media as often and as prominently as they should be.
It's a complex subject, and I enjoyed reading everyone's letters about their experiences and viewpoints.
I love the way you go after these guys in the news media. They may think the world of themselves; however, the rest of the world thinks that they're dipshits.
