get it over with already.

Would they just go ahead and nationalize this mess already??? We already own 80% of the company. This company needs to be dissolved and we need to structure the laws so that no company can grow to be 'too big to fail'.

I agree. Summers has got to go.

thank you

Thank you, Mr. Greenwald and Senator Durbin for discussing this issue in the public forum. The way the interests of big business have been inserted into our democracy through lobbying and business-guided legislation is crippling the viability of our system of government. Our democracy is supposed to be for the people by the people but the way it is working now is for business interests by business interests. This issue needs to be moved to the top of discussion in the public forum and we need to create firm laws and restrictions that prevent business from essentially buying legislation and legislators through lobbying efforts and campaign financing. If it is not dealt with we will not be able to solve the myriad of problems that require urgent attention. Robert Reich does a good job covering this problem in detail in his book "Supercapitalism". Keep bringing this issue to the fore.

give women option and birth control

I like to donate to charities that improve conditions for women around the world, helping them get access to education and birth control so that they don't have to bring more children into the world that they can't afford to feed. It is imperative that the situation women around the world face improves or it will cause increased suffering for all of us.

Original article: Cheney lives on

I wish Cheney would go away.....for a long time.

To prison that is. The new administration needs to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate and prosecute these unlawful crimes committed under the guise of "protecting" America. Dick Cheney shouldn't have access to the televised media to spread his hateful bile-filled fear-mongering. He should be sitting in a jail cell.

baby steps

I don't understand why we are taking baby steps on fuel economy when we could quickly accelerate forward. The technology already exists to improve fuel efficiency. The cars in Europe and Japan already get much better miles per gallon. Last year I rented cars in Spain and Italy, in both I was able to drive 6 hours on 1/3 a tank of gas. That is significantly better than what is being recommended by the administration. If we just licensed the technology we could catch up with the Europeans.

donate in his honor

I have been a regular financial supporter of Planned Parenthood for all of my adult life. I just went to their website moments ago and donated again. I am horrified by what happened to Dr. Tiller and I want to renew and strengthen my support for the work that this organization does to help women who are going through difficult times and making difficult choices. This terrible thing, the murder of Dr. Tiller should not have happened. He helped a lot of people in times when they were suffering, it saddens me greatly that he himself and his family had to endure so much themselves for his effort to provide health care to women.

the more things change.....

Obama strikes me as a people pleaser. He's always working to make sure he doesn't alienate anyone which ends up leaving him toothless in his ability to make real change. If you really want to make a difference you can't be afraid to make a few enemies. Teddy Roosevelt being a primary example, when he busted the trusts. When change happens there are winners and losers, the way things have been working for a long time now is that it is always the public that winds up the losers, that hasn't changed.

@Lightswitch.....strike!!

I'm with Lightswitch. I think we-the-people need to get organized and we need to strike. We need to show the government our power. I've also written letters into the void of congressional mailboxes and received their placating form letters promising nothing. The time for change is now, and our leaders aren't offering it to us.

Original article: Plundering the oceans

this is so depressing

Don't get me wrong, I am glad that you are reporting this, more people need to hear about it and care, but we are a species that has a functioning denial problem. We just can't really face reality, even when it is getting ready to smack us in the face. Sometimes I personally have to muster the courage to face it, but I prefer the bracing truth. I'm not sure we will be able to figure our way out of this problem. The changes from the top down are always incremental and never strong or clear enough, the changes from the bottom up are slow to happen, too, especially when it goes against an individual's self interest. We sometimes seem to be blindly marching as a species towards creating our own global Easter Island. Although some of us can see there are so many who cover their eyes.

Is Mark Sanford setting a poor example for his kids?

Yes, yes he is. How come no one is writing a story about that?

outrageous

I am outraged!! But what can I do about it? Write my congressperson? She's taking money from the same people who are ripping the public off. We discovered during the Gulf War II that protests don't work. No matter how many people turn out the 'rulers' don't care. Funny thing is I have many friends from other countries who say one of the reasons they came to the US was the lack of governmental corruption. I tell them there is corruption here, it's called lobbying here. Our government is no different than ones the world over, they are still in bed with business interests, whose wishes take priority over the will of the people. I will be even more disgusted if they can't manage to toss us the bone of Public Health care....greedy bastards!

not dead yet

there are no done deals here, why so fatalistic? I'm still fighting for the public option, and letting my representatives now this.
