try something different

try yoga. drop your brain, be more flexible in your ideas of how the world "should be", learn to accept how it is and how it is constantly changinge. there are things to be hopeful about, find out about them. see where you can contribute to make things better. do something positive that makes someone else feel better.

Original article: "No way, no how, no McCain"

where the heck is obama?

I mean he is the nominee right? I know he probably wants to make a grand entrance, but in the interest of party unity, I think it would have made sense for him to be there. He's campaigning in Montana when all of the action is in Denver, I don't get it.

insulting

> The Palin nomination will be celebrated as a measure of social progress by optimists like my friend Joan Walsh.

As a woman, I am insulted by this choice of nomination.....as if I would vote for someone simply because of what is between their legs and not what stand for. It reeks to me of sexism. McCain is more likely to get support from the Christian right on this choice, then from any well-informed conscious women.

Original article: John McCain's cowardice

where credit is due

The first time I remember hearing a politician use this expression it was the Governor of Texas Anne Richards. It's been used all over the place since then....it's now a cliche. All politicians should stop using it immediately because it's played out.

Original article: Fresh blood for the vampire

why perpetuate her?

Really Salon, why do you keep publishing the work of this obnoxious instigator who long ago lost any relevancy?

Never underestimate your mother, Lisa.

This reminds me of a Simpson episode, where the nuclear power plant owner Montgomery Burns is running for office and decides it'd be a great photo op the night before the election to have dinner with a regular family. Of course he chooses the Simpsons. Lisa is disgusted at the idea and can't believe her family is going along supporting this phony political BS. Marge turns to her and says, "Never underestimate your mother, Lisa." They all sit down to dinner, surround by reporters and photographers. Marge brings out the main course on a covered dish and puts it down in front of Mr. Burns. She lifts off the cover and there sits the three eyed fish that lives in the water runoff from the nuclear power plant. She goad him into eating it. He cuts out a bite, puts it in his mouth and then spits it out, with reporters covering every minute of it. Needless to say he lost the election.

I'm glad that the women of the View took him to task somebody needed to do it. They've redeemed their credibility in my eyes.

Original article: Wall Street's very bad day

real news

"From the end of the Democratic National Convention until today, the political dynamic belonged to Sarah Palin. But the governor of Alaska is suddenly old news."

Thank God (or Allah or the Flying Spaghetti Monster)! I was listening to Democracy Now this morning (they had a fascinating and detailed background analysis on Osama bin Laden today), and it made me wistful for more real reporting where many of the issues facing our world are covered. Mr. Leonard here does a great job covering many beats, but I am sick of the All-Palin, all the time slant to the current news cycle.

Original article: McCain wins!

time to reboot

first he wasn't even going to attend, and now he wins preemptively. I think the robots are going haywire this week!

economic amnesia

Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

- George Santayana

Unfortunately, our culture has economic amnesia.

the poor kid

I actually feel sorry for the kid. He's going to have to grow up with a terribly narcissistic mother and will likely be in therapy for years. Like another commenter I started reading the article but was completely turned off by the classism underscoring it and couldn't finish. The writer actually seemed to have contempt for the woman carrying her child...talk about lacking empathy not to mention gratitude. The sense of entitlement was palpable, and it was disgusting.

upstate problems are not limited to New York

The problems facing upstate New York are not unique to the region. Manufacturing across the nation has taken a beating as American businesses just can not compete with the prices of the same goods manufactured in India and China. Textile factories all across the south have been closed, putting thousands of people out of work, as their jobs have been shipped overseas. These problems are facing people all across America and in upstate New York. All states need representatives who understand these problems, care and want to do something to help the people put out of work. As someone who hasn't had to work, who hasn't held a full-time job in a while or had to provide for her family, I'm not convinced that Caroline Kennedy is a proper choice to represent the widely varied and struggling populace of New York.

Organic Hope

I wouldn't bet the farm so quickly on Monsanto. There was an article in The Independent about the rebirth of organic farming in emerging markets, specifically Malawi. Farmers there have been priced out of chemical fertilizers and have turned back to traditional methods and found that their yields are better. Yes, the climate is changing and we will need to adapt, but I'm not convinced that genetically engineering our way out is the solution to this mess. Link to the article by clicking on my name.
