Conventional Wisdom
[Read the article: Kerry to Swift Boaters: Bring it on, again]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Why oh why oh why oh why does a 37% rating among Democrats make Hillary a "frontrunner" who has the nomination sewn up??? Doesn't that rating mean that 63% of Democrats want someone, ANYONE other than Hillary??? Why is that never pointed out in the MSM??

How about This for Clarification?
[Read the article: Quote of the Day]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Didn't Bush see "Passion of the Christ?" I'd say just about anything Gibson imposed on Cavietzel constitutes humiliating treatment, huh? So much for Bush's Christianity.

Unbelievable
[Read the article: Message: I listen]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]So, success is "a country that governs, defends itself, that is a free society, that serves as an ally in this war on terror." In other words, we'll leave when Iraq become England.

Dear No Name
[Read the article: Rove, proven liar]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I'm am so sick of the "Sandy Berger" defense. The Republics had the Congress for 6 years--if they wanted to investigate the poo outta Berger, they would have. They could have issued subpoenaes up the whazoo. They could've put Berger on the tee-vee under oath. But they didn't. I wonder why? There's no there there. Jeez, puhleez stop getting your talking points from Rush!

I'm so sick of this
[Read the article: A meeting with the president]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]One way to begin to ratchet down the animosity between the WH and the Congressional majority would be to refer to the party as the DemocratIC party. Everywhere in his comments, he refers to "Democrat leadership" and "Democrat majority." when oh when will Dems consistenly refer to the minority as the Republics?

Tired of his job?
[Read the article: Two sides of the same coin?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Driving home yesterday after reading again about the search for the War Czar, it occurred to me that Bush is just tired of being president. He's bored. The job is harder than he expected and takes a lot of energy. He'd rather be out cutting brush or whatever the hell it is he does. He'd rather be hangin' out with the good ol' boys on the ranch. He just wants to shake people's hands and tell 'em they're doin' a heckuva job.
I've always said he would've made a great baseball commissioner. A great gladhander. That is about the extent of his talent.

Cheney doesn't need to HAVE anythng on Bush . . .
[Read the article: Ten things about Dick]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]. . . Bush has been a figurehead or puppet from the get-go. He's been a total failure in every business he undertook before his presidency, and he was and is, utterly ill-equipped to be the president. The real MO is that he's always, always had someone there to bail him out. Couple all this with Cheney's ambitions and unelectability and the emergency/opportunity afforded by 9/11 and we arrive at what we have now.
Bush was never that interested in being President; he really believed, I think, that the job would be easy, as easy as governing Texas. And with a GOP-lead Congress, and without 9/11 it likely would have been: booming economy, huge surpluses, international respect. 9/11 is what Cheney used to manipulate a man unfit to lead baseball time, much less the United States of America. Cheney saw the opportunity to right the "wrongs" going back to Watergate, and he took them.

Grendel
[Read the article: The poisonous rhetorical legacy of Karl Rove]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Rove's allusion to Grendel is apt and quite revealing. I regularly teach Beowulf. The society depicted therein is governed by rules of engagement and hospitality. Warriors have rules that all agree to. Violating hospitality is looked upon with horror.
Grendel violates all the rules of this society: he will not agree to terms of engagement in battle; he will not even reveal what his demands are to stop his infernal attacks; he will not negotiate; he violates hospitality in the most egregious way, by entering the Geats' hall at night to murder and cannibalize the sleeping men; he is only interested in "winning". He cannot be stopped and he cannot be reasoned with because he refuses to play by anyone's rules but his own. Grendel is, in short, a terrorist--he creates an atmosphere of paralyzing terror against which his victims are helpless to respond.
Rove's allusion was deliberate. And quite accurate. His tactics violate the rules because the only important thing is winning. My question: where is the liberals' Beowulf?

Zemeckis' missed chance
[Read the article: "Beowulf"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"Frankly, nothing about the original poem appealed to me," [Zemeckis] is quoted as saying.
What a moron. This epic is vibrating with relevance to our times!! I teach Beowulf nearly every semester and my students have no problem understanding that Grendel is terrifying because he's a TERRORIST--he can't be negotiated with; he refuses to obey the rules of combat; the Danes have no idea what he really wants from them. All Grendel wants is to terrorize the Danes and destroy their culture from within.
No one has mentioned the other wretched thing Zemeckis has done to this epic--having Grendel's father be King Hrothgar!!! WTF?? And having his Queen sexually attracted to Beowulf. The women of Beowulf are deeply involved in the regulation, protection, and diplomatic relations of their culture. But no, to Zemeckis, they're just hot babes.
He should be beaten with sticks.

Media Hypocrisy
[Read the article: McCain campaign gets greedy]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Why is it that John Kerry's service could be and was significantly examined and attacked by the MSM after the swiftboating--and that in comparison to Bush's lack of service during the Vietnam war--but McCain's service is somehow sacred and not-to-be-questioned? Why is it that examinations of Bush's service was also never taken seriously by the MSM? I'm sick and tired of McCain being treated like a "war hero"--whose lives did he save? What heroic act did he perform? How many victories did he lead? I'm not denigrating his strength and endurance as a POW nor am I denigrating his service--both are admirable. But Clark was and is correct--where was the leadership in getting show down and imprisoned? Did he lead a prison break???
One more thing--last night on Cafferty a commentor stated that McCain's education at the Naval Academy was proof he had been trained to be a leader--without mention, of course, that he graduated at the bottom of his class.
Liberal media?
