Kudos from Charles Pierce

From Charles Pierce, over at Eric Alterman's Altercation:

p.s. -- KO, you know I love you, but don't tangle with Glenn Greenwald on this stuff. You're going to go down like Duane Bobick if you try. And, as far as your defense of the barely defensible goes, this passage right here -- "I don't know much about Mr. Greenwald and I didn't read his full piece, but I do know that the snippet he's taken out of the transcript of my conversation with Jon Alter last night makes it sound like I was saying defying the left was a good thing" -- is what the astronomers would call an "extinction-level event." It's not like Greenwald's writing The Origin Of The Species every day, for pity's sake. Do better, please.

Torres and Ballack

Don't forget Torres' header that hit the post and would have beaten a late arriving Lehman. As much as I admired Ballack's play this spring with Chelski and his performance in the tourney, he is really an unlikable player. The constant complaining and the cheap shots are tiresome. I now recall Gattuso and Ballack's interlude in a different light in WC 2006. Gattuso went to help Ballack up off the ground and then reached around the back of his head and gave his ear a tug. Ballack of course went ballistic and cried to the ref, to no avail. Just play the game Ballack. And don't get me started on Lehman! His days are over, hopefully, and his return to the Bundesliga is welcome as I won't have to listen to him anymore.

Top this

How about a failed vasectomy? Dudes, mine failed. Girlfriend got pregnant. I'm going to be a dad. Again. And here I foolishly thought that a vasectomy was final and 99.96% effective. So much for my future as I envisioned it five months ago......

NPR BREAKS THE BIG NEWS, WITH PICTURES!!!!

Case solved friends. NPR has just revealed that their intrepid reporter unearthed Ivins' high school yearbook and spoke with the director of a high school play in which Ivins--- sit down, now, are you ready for this?---- played the role of a murderer! Ivins' high school photo is on the NPR web site, friends, according to the reporter.

Whew, now I can sleep well tonight. I'll bet NPR next finds out a link between Ivins, the real Nicole Simpson/Ron Goldman killer and JonBenet Ramsey's killer. Send in your pledges now so NPR can continue in its important work!

Brilliant

Cary, your response was brilliant. I have been through a similar experience and it is exactly analogous to an addiction. The LW has to learn to live differently and must give up on the fantasy that one day, he and N will be together. Just like you wrote, a junkie cannot someday have a different relationship with heroin. Three years is too long. I suggest that the LW get help.

Courtesans and arrivistes

The unctuous and odious David Brooks and his fellow travelers are the harlots and slatterns to power. That they have forums on The New York Times, PBS, NPR et. al. and they are free to discourse without fear of correction, in the form of losing their jobs or a cut in pay, tells any sentient being that the US is fucked, more or less. Brooks is frantically giving mouth-to-mouth to the long since expired canary in the coal mine. Or to use a pop culture metaphor, Brooks has been carrying the corpse of America around like it was "Weekend at Bernie's." The changing demographics are inexorably rolling over the "new establishment". This is their last stand.
