"Hypocrisy is the homage which vice pays to virtue."

"The only thing that should astonish us is that we are still capable of astonishment."
Francois de La Rochefoucauld
"I can't go on. I must go on." -- Samuel Beckett.
Cary, your response was pitch-perfect. LW, yours was one of the most eloquent letters I've read in a long, long time.
All the best.
I know this is a fantasy but just think about it:
What if Hillary came out and said, "Obama is what this country needs and I am stopping my campaign immediately. I would be honored to be his vice-presidential running mate but if he doesn't choose me, I will do everything in my power to see Obama elected as president."
Not bloody likely.....
Ok, RichEmery, so now any critique of Hillary is just like criticism of the Chimp in Chief?
Maybe Hillary will put on a tight-fitting flight suit and prance around the deck of air craft carrier next to demonstrate her commander in chief bona fides. I can hardly wait.
RichEmery, your ox is being gored. Simple.
Notorious: brilliant quip about prying Heston's gun from him!
I don't support NPR any longer and find myself turning it off more and more. Juan Williams? Please, he's as much a "liberal" as Zell Miller and JoeMentum Leiberman. The Cokester? Vapid country club Repugnant speak. Mara Liasson? Total shill for the M$M and Repugnant talking points. Steve Inskeep? A condescending talking head, who always frames issues in a favorable light to the right-wing. I think NPR is an excellent example of the Right's "working the refs" (Eric Altermann) and I only listen to them for Click and Clack, Frank DeFord and other infotainment pieces. Their political reporting is for shit.
Sort of like Hillary's "mis-speaking" about her Navy Seal adventure in Bosnia. Or Ronnie Raygun's storming the beaches at Normandy. But hey, I'm sure both Hillary and Mukasey are well-qualified to answer the red phone at 3:00 am. [Ronnie's "mommy" was the one answering the phone back then.] Look, over there! Barry Hussein just threw a gutter ball!
Hey HFred;
Favre went into rehab in 1996 and to my knowledge, has been sober since.
Favre has two daughters.
In April 2000, 4 years into Favre's sobriety, Chmura was arrested for inappropriate sexual contact (or whatever the legal term is--statutory rape?) with a minor at a freakin' prom party! Chmura is the same guy that wouldn't attend the post Super Bowl reception at the White House because Slick Willy had gotten a hummer from an intern (not a minor, mind you, and consensual) and Chmura, the good right wing nut that he is, wouldn't tolerate that behavior.
After Chmura's arrest, the Packers released him.
Apparently you really like Mark Chmura.
Hairyfred:
you wrote: "Chmura and Favre were notorious drinking buddies until Chmura's arrest (it wasn't just after work drinks)."
Well, that just ain't so. Favre cleaned up in 1996; your boyfriend was arrested in 2000. Apparently your love for big BC boys causes no small amount of cognitive dissonance vis-a-vis Favre.....
From Time, here's the account of what happened with Chmura and the prom party and the hot tub: [Among other things, Chmura's lawyer was the same guy that represented Jeffrey Dahmer. I hear Dahmer was also pissed that Favre never contacted him during his brief stay in prison.]

And apparently, this snippet is what has hairyfred all wound up over Favre's being so mean to Chewie (April 2006):
Talking about his former teammate Chmura said: "He's a selfish guy. He's a very selfish guy." Chmura went on to say how Favre was hurting the Packers with his indecision about whether to play next season or not.
Last week Favre was quoted as saying, "What are they going to do, cut me?"
Chmura weighed in on that one. "With a quote like (that) it's all about him. People that don't think that it's all about him are fooling themselves."
And then Chmura went on to complain about what he was really angry about, that Favre never rushed to his side to comfort him in his hour of need during the trial.
That Favre let a friend down. That he's not a leader. It's like Wolfowitz, Cheney and Feith all relying on Ahmed Chalabi.
I suppose I wasn't direct enough in my first post so here's someone that said it quite nicely, no room for ambiguity (your reliance on Chmura is bordering on the petulant, like a toddler throwing a temper tantrum):
Chmura's pissed because Favre, the father of two daughters, doesn't want to associate with a married man who got a bunch of 17 and 18-year olds drunk and then fooled around (whether consensually or not, does it really matter?) with his 17-year old babysitter.
I'm shocked that a man like Chmura has the gall to question anyone's character. Although, I shouldn't be. After all, Chmura refused to meet with Bill Clinton at the White House after Super Bowl XXXI because he "lost respect" for Clinton due to his relationship with Monica Lewinsky. When Chmura calls Favre a hypocrite, I guess he's relying on the "takes-one-to-know-one defense".
While Chmura was acquitted of sexual assault, he is guilty of being a dumbass. As such, he should just shut up.
