[Read more letters about this article: Here]Am I the only one who thought Harriett Miers was being installed on the Supreme Court to protect Bush and his machine from consequences as they do an end run around the constitution in pursuit of this insane imperial presidency?
Alito may at least have qualifications for the job, but he is Bush's man. It's fair to liken it to letting an accused felon choose his brother-in-law as his presiding judge.It will be a lifetime free pass for these frightening men.

WalMart and Idaho

[Read more letters about this article: Here]It's no surprise that elected officials in Idaho might be inclined to beat up WalMart. These are small communities, and when you live in one, (as I do, recently, lamentably and hopefully short-term) you see first-hand what this monolith does. Small businesses close. Almost all of them. And by the time everyone realizes that the prices are good at WalMart, but that's only because all the merchandise is a very limited selection of cheap Chinese crap...it's too late. It's not a state thing...it's a community thing. Communities which WalMart hasn't literally sucked dry have reason to care less.

Mary Landrieu's Republican spine

[Read more letters about this article: Here]I wouldn't be too worried about Mary Landrieu, her positions of tha past year have shamefully placed her squarely in the "Republican mascarading as a Democrat" category. Plenty of Democrats on the hill are agitating for a filibuster, and with pressure from constituents, it can happen.
A basic tenet of propaganda is getting the word out that something is true, or untrue, and will or will not happen. Public opinion listens and adjusts itself. In this case, I hope and pray it doesn't work...and I am outraged at this, the latest of Mary Landrieus abandonment of the principles of the Democratic party, and the heritage of American government and policy. Landrieu doesn't need a spine, she needs to register as a Republican.
Filibuster. Filibuster. Filibuster. And Landrieu's pressing issues be relegated to second place, where they belong.

[Read more letters about this article: Here]The most appalling thing to me...aside from the fact that the man who has his finger on the man who has his finger on the button can't miss a 78-year-old in an orange vest...is that Cheney travels with a medical entourage and has an ambulance "on call". For all the assurances that he is in robust health, isn't this a little overkill? No pun intended.

[Read more letters about this article: Here]As the mother of a Marine who was admitted to Georgetown Law and opted to serve his country instead, and the mother of a similarly bright and level-headed Marine Corp reservist who joined after 9/11, I agree. Both my sons have served in Iraq, and on a really bad day have far more intelligence and plain common sense than George W. Bush.
I am currently involved in efforts to support veterans running for public office, not because they are veterans, but because they are brave, dedicated, willing to do what it takes to get a job done, and willing to be "ready and able", not arrogant and willful. They would never squander the lives of our sons and daughters in a petulant display of ego and ignorance. And I hope that whenever people see them out there fighting against big money and the "good old boys" network with only the support of people who really care....that people give them a thank you and a leg up. And a check.
Having said that...there is a more important qualification Mr. Keillor should consider as the first requirement for the highest office in the land. An IQ test.

So maybe we should acknowledge that guns are used more for sport than for killing.....after all.....in the time that it takes one criminal to rob and gun down the owner of a convenience store, Cheney can blow away 70 quail.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T this is what it means to me

[Read more letters about this article: Here]Mr. Hoyer needs to get his indignity straight. George W. Bush has disrespected the constitution, the laws of the United States, the rights and privacy of individuals, his fiscal responsibility, the dignity of the poor, the needs of the elderly and sick, the hopes of average Americans, not to mention the health, welfare and very lives of our troops. Yet I haven't heard a word from Mr. Hoyer about respect.
Respect is not a "perk" that comes with the office. Being President, or anything else, does not entitle you to it. And while George W. Bush's enormous sense of entitlement has netted him a lot of free passes, it's time he learned that he, like everyone else, must inevitably earned it.
He never had the respect of many of us...and he has lost the respect of most of those who gave it to him carte blanche out of misguided judgement. However, he deserves to have the truth told to his face. And if he can't stand the heat, he should get out of the White House.
Bravo, Stephen Colbert! For refusing to pussyfoot around the dangerous moron in the room. And to all those "journalists" who sat there stonefaced. Be vigilant. The media is hardly a bastion of the truth, these days. But it is our last best hope in an administration determined to lie, cheat, steal and hide the truth behind an ever-increasing wall of secrecy.
