  • Aaaaaaaaaargh!!!!!

[Read the article: Bells and whistles?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Bells and f-ing whistles? Is he kidding? The way these idiots continue to try to trivialize our laws, our history and our values is just beyond belief.

The attempts of Congress to assign some measurement of success is "bells and whistles". And, of course, the ever-amazing Bushism that Congress is entitled to its "opinion". And the assessment that the Geneva Convention is "quaint".

These people have achieved something that is waaaaay beyond mere hubris. They have stacked every branch of government, every agency with lightweights and incompetents whose only qualification is that they are loyal "Bushies" or granduated for Oral Roberts favorite school. And then they have the nerve to categorize the opinions of everyone else, including the mandates of the courts (the uninfiltrated ones), the legislation of Congress, and the will of the people as simply inconsequential.

Bells and whistles my livid, outraged, disgusted, amazed and almost speechless Democrat (sic) Party ass!

  • The real John Edwards stands up

[Read the article: John Edwards live]

Comparing John Edwards the candidate for president with his campaigning in 2004 is irrelevant. Then, he was strategically John Kerry's shadow, unable by campaign "management" to let his wonderfully intelligent and insightful light shine fully. I campaigned with/for them, and we were constantly muscled into the talking points of the day. It's the way campaigns are kept focused, but in this case, I think it sabotaged one of the strongest assets we had...John Edwards.

Now, John Edwards has come into his own. His strengths are not being "managed" in a situation where he has to be the accompanying feature. He's the main event...and now free to show fully the person he is. Fair, compassionate, intelligent, informed, articulate, likeable, judicious, principled, and...well...you get the idea.

The media should stop focusing on how much money the candidates are raising, and start reporting what they are saying. John Edwards is the man to watch. Not to be trite...but what you see and hear is what you get. For a change.

  • Taking out the trash

In recent weeks I have been driven away from Salon.com more than a couple of times by the sudden increase in serial incivility and what appears to be a guerilla assault on rational, though partisan, discourse. It was disheartening, because I viewed Salon as one of the few places where this wasn't happening. I wrote notes to Salon and to Joan Walsh about the increasing pitch of gratuitous viciousness...while realizing that it was driving me to want to give what I was getting. Not a good place to be. Shut up, or shout back.

Thank you for listening to what I am sure are a number of people who have been experiencing this disappointment. Putting some controls in place which make it harder for those intent on disrupting dialog, rather than contributing to it, is, as Martha Stewart would say, if she gave a damn about anything deeper than the level for planting roses....a good thing.

Now, if people would just feel that what they have to say should be said under their real names. Anonymity is a cowardly shield that has a place only when society enforces reprisals and sanctions that threaten the futures of those who engage in their right to free speech and dissenting opinions....oh....right....nevermind.

Anyway, thanks for restoring some semblance of order. I respectfully sign this...with my real name.

  • Garry Owens...hope you see this

I wanna have your baby! (except that I'm too old and too tired from worrying about the two Marines I already raised)

But then...you know what I mean!

No, you're not an old git, and I have been looking for you, Locutus, trying to pick out your style in posts with other signatures, since you disappeared. Or so it seemed. Thankfully you are STILL around. One of the reasons I am STILL around. I would rather read your posts than nearly everything else that shows up on this site...articles included.

    Sigh. What a relief, friend.

  • What can I say...

Nothing. So I just laughed. Right out loud.

Very helpful. Thanks so much for the web link from a very code-challenged typerer.

  • Why don't we just call this what it is.....

[Read the article: A very expensive neocon love affair]

Would somebody please explain how putting Wolfie's mistress in a close-to-$200K job at the State Department will "balance the interests of the institution and the rights of the staff member in an exceptional and unprecedented situation."

This is hardly exceptional or unprecedented. It's the oldest game being played in the big boardrooms. Incompetent obnoxious guy gets a big fat job he doesn't deserve and rewards himself by giving his sack-mate a similar perk so neither of them have to feel less than over-paid and super important. Instead of stuffing currency in someone's g-string, he's handing out a juicy payday and a bucketload of status at someone else's expense.

The idea that this is couched (sorry, couldn't help it) in the rhetoric of protecting Wolfowitz' right to screw around on the job is absurd...even for this crew. The World Bank. Is there no place these guys haven't turned into a circus of the intellectually and ethically challenged? If it was a problem to have her around...maybe she should have found another job. A real one. On the other hand, I've seen the Michael Moore video of him licking his comb...she's probably earning every cent.
