Bullshit. In my field, it is usually a condition of publication that the raw data must be made available (online or whatever.) And we gladly do that as a favor to the community anyway. Scientists usually *like* to share their data.

Obviously no one is asking for raw data that has not been used yet, so scooping is not an issue. These are publicly funded scientists. They say that their data tells us the sky is falling any day unless we adopt some pretty radical changes. So I think it is reasonable to ask to see the raw data as well as the code. Certainly after reading their emails I am not inclined to blindly trust these people.

That surely must mean that they don't think they have a leg to stand on in the open air of scientific inquiry.

I dunno, that is pretty much what I have always thought about why CRU, NASA et al refuse to release their raw data or code. Do you have another explanation for that behavior?

FOIA requests for raw data have been turned down over and over. Now the raw data has been released by the hacker- I guess we shall soon see if anything interesting is there. But either way it goes, it is wrong for the climate scientists to withhold their raw data.

no, this is not a normal exchange. These scientists work for US, and they have concealed data, "lost" data, and delayed on FOIA requests for quite some time now. These emails prove that they were actively avoiding the FOIA requests (against the law) and going so far as to collude to delete emails. This is NOT how science is supposed to work.

The emails might not "prove" that AGW is a "hoax" but they sure don't look good for the climate scientists.
