But the simple existence of evil and pain does not negate the existence of a merciful God, if you believe that this world/life is not all there is.

yes, because the idea of everlasting hellfire is much more consistent with a loving merciful God. laf. What a morbid and bizarre mythology you've chosen.

  • yes really

wow, anonymous, you're a hoot. C.S. Lewis is your source for insightful quotes?

You obviously haven't studied much genetics, either. If you had, you would know that there is plenty of junk DNA that we know is junk DNA. Yes, there is some so-called-junk DNA turning out to have previously unknown functions, but some of it is clearly junk.

re "The Truth", I'll leave it to you to figure out why E=mc2 is the same anywhere, while religion has reared its little head in multiple fantastic forms all over the globe. Ahem. Have fun.

so God is the only thing keeping you from hurting people? I guess I'm glad you have God then. Not all of us are such sociopaths though.

  • right, so

like I said, a genetics primer would serve you well.

you could start with stuff like, I dunno, off the top of my head, transposons, microsatellites and pseudogenes?

  • CS Lewis

If the whole universe has no meaning, we should never have found out that it has no meaning.

    and why not?

  • well,

*my* responses actually addressed several of your points (we need God to be moral, there's no such thing as junk DNA, and the quote from that master of logic CS Lewis), it's ok if you don't want to respond to me though. I understand.

  • keep it coming

I couldn't even get through half of that garbage article, but I hope Salon keeps publishing Cammy because the letters are always so funny and entertaining. At least Salon has intelligent witty *readers*.

  • scientology, huh?

[Read the article: Real inconvenient truths]

And there ARE science cults. (Scientology anyone?)

Scientology is based on science? Do you have any clue, at all?

That's why we read history. It's an antidote to smug self-righteousness, which makes us insufferable.

Funny. I guess you need to crack a few more books then.

  • Poison = Bad

[Read the article: How do I get rid of mice? Plus: Testimonials needed!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Poison is also a slow gruesome death for the animal, people, just not one as visable to you as the glue traps. But really, do you know what poison does to a critter? yuck. Not to mention it can work its way up the food chain often ending up poisoning hawks or owls- hopefully anyone using poisons will reconsider.

why don't you read sometime what Hamas actually says. They are dedicated to the destruction of Isreal and the death of all Jews. Do you dispute that?

  • more racism

[Read more letters about this article: Here]

by the way I've noticed it's not mentioned in any major western news that all the muslems poor little feelers have been hurt and offended again by the knighting of Salman Rushdie, and they have renewed their dedication to blowing him up.

yes, quite racist of us to express our disgust at these actions.

  • LAME

[Read the article: Bad news dad]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

yes, yes, it's "ok" if you don't think every bowel movement is precious or whatever like some people are defending this lame excuse for an article. It's just that writing a boring, whiny, patheitc screed about how obnoxious your children are ON FATHER'S DAY is maybe a bit tasteless and why would Salon think this is what we want to waste our work time reading? The stupid self-absorbed old man who wrote this should be ashamed. I hope his poor kids never get ahold of it. How would that feel.

  • "I hope we're both smart enough to see past the rhetoric"

There are elements in Hamas that claim they want to push Israel into the sea, of course.

elements? it is their stated position. and the people voted for that.

We both know that they might as well be advocating pushing them to the moon. They are hardly a threat to the existance of Israel.

They are a threat to the existence of individual civilians in Isreal though, (not to mention the ones on their own side, and the Arab christians, etc.) That is enough for me.

I am not an Isreali cheerleader. I don't care too much about Isreal per se. I just don't like terrorists too much.

  • me too

count me in as one more disgrunteld "liberal" who thinks this article is shit and letting in millions of illegals is shit. I live in Texas, and I see communities that are nothing but hispanic, everything is in spanish, and they look like mexico. Have you guys been to mexico? Do you really want to live in filth and squalor? Professor, come over here and with the goodness of your little bleeding heart please help my neighbors clean up their lawns and pay for their vasectomies, I guess they are too poor to be bothered by little things like taking out the trash, or birth control. Then I might listen to the vacuous nonsense you're spewing.

I can't believe it, but I'm considering voting repug next election. The Democrats are blowing it here.

how self-absorbed and narcissistic do you have to be to do this stuff?

  • @ serai1

the religious argument goes, "God made the world". You can't get simpler than that.

it takes a severe lack of imagination to think that this is the "simplest" statement. It obviously begs the questions, so who made God? What IS God and how did he actually make the world?

doesn't seem like anyone's made much progress on these fronts, so far.

  • omooex, you should be ashamed

[Read the article: Inside the minds of killer doctors]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

If the 'terrorists' feel a sense of urgency, I can't see how any sane person, no matter what they think of their ideology, could blame them.

you do realize that "sense of urgency" somehow translates into killing innocent people, right? But in your world killing innocent people is something that "sane" people should accept or condone?

    man, you are screwed up.

  • Abomination

[Read the article: The Senate says "Om," Part 2]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

the real abomination is that a Senate session is opened with any kind of prayer, in the first place.
