It is a shame that one must read Ahmad Rashid’s Descent Into Chaos and Sarah Chayes’ The Punishment of Virtue to be able to see just how unprepared the U.S. was to attempt to administer Afghanistan and how badly we screwed it up.
From Rumsfeld all the way down to the 1st Lt. on the ground, we had no concept of how their culture worked.
I don't think that this is all the product of the bush administration. It is also American Hubris.
Rodriguez is clearly way out of touch. My parents, born 5 days apart around New Years Day, 1913, never to my knowledge went to a movie or saw a Hollywood extravaganza. They lived thru the whole depression, getting married in 1937. It was scrimp, scrimp and more scrimp. Dad bought one new car his whole life, a 1956 Chevvy.
Here is an example of scrimping, besides the socks Mom darned. Gilette made a double edged razor blade with the trade name of Blue Blade, later to be followed by the Super Blue Blade.
Anyway, when the blade had been used a few times and was getting dull, Dad would sharpen it by putting it in a drinking glass and putting an index finger in the center of it and going from side to side rubbing the cutting edge against the glass.
And the Harvard professor? Me thinks his students are rather shallow.
Assuming that like Bybee/Yoo come up with an outrageous opinion that the AG and POTUS go along with, how could this be overturned?
Could some citizen with standing file in a U.S. District Court and then the loser appeal to the Supremes?
Is it really that simple ? (I know it isn't really simple)
